Hi all,

Artemis here. Long time lurker, newly registered user, first time poster.

I've long been dabbling in hiking here and there and have recently gotten more serious about it. I'm a college student who lives in Boston and I've hiked quite a bit in the Greater Boston area, as well as in CT and NH. Recently I've been looking into trying out a "mini thru-hike" of just a few days to combine my basic camping experience with my decent hiking experience and learn and improve. The North South Trail in RI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North%E2%80%93South_Trail) seems to me to be the best bet, as it is an easy trail, can be hiked in about 4 days, and if I travel northbound I actually finish up fairly close to where my parents live, and they've said they'd happily come and pick me up! :D

The only issue is that I'm having a hard time finding information about the trail. I've read two threads about it on this forum - found here (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?59238-The-North-South-trail-in-RI) and here (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?98521-The-North-South-Trail-of-Rhode-Island) - and have scoured the internet, but there isn't too much. There's one guide book (http://www.amazon.com/North-South-Trail-Traveling-Equestrians/dp/0971362505) out there but it's out of print and is very expensive, especially considering that I've recently spent money acquiring the right gear to begin to do things like this. Ideally I could find some of the information that is allegedly in the guide book about how to do a northbound hike (with detailed information in case I lose the trail, though it's supposed to be well-blazed), alternate paths, as well as good maps. I know that there are the "Almost Official" (http://www.outdoors.htmlplanet.com/nst/nst_map00.htm) maps, and I have those printed already and sitting neatly in a folder (I'm quite eager if you couldn't already tell.) I also know that there isn't info on how to thru-hike the trail in the book, because one would have to stealth camp due to it not being allowed, but that's not what concerns me, as I've read that this is fairly easy to accomplish.

Anyway, if anyone has any additional, useful information on this trail, I would really appreciate it. Also tips for doing a first thru-hike are greatly appreciated! I'm hoping to get out on the trail in the next month or so, after I graduate.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I've played around on this trail a lot. I've "thru Hiked" it and biked it. It's fun and pretty easy. the maps work great, but the book comes in handy too. There are lots of road sections - you just don't want to get stuck on one when it's time to camp for the night. Stealth camping is easy. Carry all your food. there is plenty of water available - sometimes you just need to knock on a door and ask to fill up your bottle. If you have any specific questions let me know I'll do my best to help you out.
