I have been hearing reports about the trail building for the new woods trail around Flagg,
so I thought I would check it out;
Thanks to all the volunteers for their hard work.
The first mile or so after the southern terminus at Weogufka Forest Rd. (as it is now signed)
is blazed very well and all the leaves have been raked off making for an easy to follow trail.
The sidehilling on the slopes gave my ankles a real workout.
The further north we went the more we noticed the amount of work that has been done
notching into the slope to make a nice treadway.
The only problem navigating is where the trail comes to the logging rd. at the clear cut,
no indication as to which way to follow the logging rd. Left is correct.
I counted 5 reliable water sources and as many seasonal in this 5 mile section.
One terrific overlook of Weogufka Creek about half way through.
Since there is no TH indicators, I presume the powers that be are not ready for the hikers
to consider this section ready for them.

Thanks again to all the volunteers.

Hey Blister Bob, The trail has not been cleared all the way through. You can get to the creek but from there to the south end has not been finished yet. We are planning on using National Trails Day to hopefully get enough volunteers to help complete this task. Anyone who wants to hike in to the creek is welcome!! :-) I believe the trail is blazed on to the southend, just not completely built yet. Come and enjoy.
The new Coosa Trail is also open and ready for hikers.

So when is the trailhead moving to the actual summit of Flagg Mountain?

to be blunt, it seems like the Forever Wild crew got in too big of a hurry when they spent all that money putting in a Trailhead parking lot, pavilion and kiosk where they did instead of waiting a couple years until we could get the top of the mountain all fixed up and have the official southern terminus there !

Of course they could pull up the kiosk and move it, but not so easy for that oversized pavilion. Plenty of parking already on top unless the plan is too keep it closed to vehicles.

Hope they have some public meetings involving all interested parties when deciding what can be done with all the partly restored buildings. IMHO, volunteers DO IT BETTER, once we get clear direction on what can be done. Just give us the specs for how to do it, supervisor on site once a week, maybe grants for big % of material cost, and it turns into a fun challenge instead of just another job for the state to pay for.

ATHOUGH, that big plan didn't work out very well for the Coosa County group in the past ?? Maybe they shoulda stuck with just one or two buildings instead of trying to fix up half a dozen.

Thx everyone for the updates. All the good work being done with the Pinhoti Tr is admirable. I can absolutely see the possibility and worthiness of including a Pinhoti Tr Thru-hike onto a AT, BMT, Bartram, Tr, etc hike.
