Never been in the area and just want to confirm a 40 deg bag is plenty. Thanks

Hard to say. I once froze my butt off in the Roan high knob shelter about this time of year. I had a 40 bag and it went down to 20 that night. You'll just have to check the forecast and remember it is much colder at 6200 feet then anywhere you might get a temperature prediction for.

Depending on how good the bag actually is at 40, you might be okay. I usually take about 10 degrees off a bag rating to be in the comfort zone and would consider a 40 bag marginal for Roan Mt at this time of year.

Thanks Slogoen. Sofia knows is showing low of mid 50s next week at High Knob Shelter and I figured a 40 deg Montbell Bag with mid weight top and bottom and a MH synthetic Jacket and Beannie I should be alright but figured I'd asked the experts since I have never been in the area.

What you put under the bag makes big difference too. Have you used your proposed sleep system at 40 degrees or less before and been comfortable?

Ray's Weather, best source for that part of the world, predicts lows in the 50s for Boone, etc., so 40 something is probably ok at Roan Mtn.

Thanks Wayne. I've got a All season Neoair with a R Value of 3.? (Can't quite remember). I've used it around that temp and think I'll be fine down to at least 40.

Well, I just got back from trail work up there. It was 37f and very windy around 10 this morning at Carvers Gap. So you could figure low 30s overnight. When we left around 4:30, it was 52f and still very windy at the gap. By the time I got back to Elizabethton, it was 70f. 18f difference.

See you on the trail,

There you go. Real world data point logged.
Meanwhile, my daughter & granddaughter ran the New River Half Marathon this morning. Perfect running weather.

Sleep we'll.
