My brother is coming up for an extended weekend next week and we want to get out to a nice camping spot where we can do some day hikes during the day and head back to camp at night. I haven't lived here in north NJ for very long so i'm not very familiar with what's available. I do see quite a few state parks with marked trails and camping, so i wanted to know if anyone has any experience with any of them. Can you recommend any one place over another?

Check out the NYNJ Trail Conference http://nynjtc.org/panel/gohiking or NJ Hiking http://www.njhiking.com/ for lots of good suggestions.

Waywayanda State Park is very nice. Check out http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/wawayanda.html You could hike the A.T. north to the NJ/NY border and back the first day...then camp. Next day hike south to the Pinwheels Vista near Vernon @ Rt 94 and the great views. There is a shelter (Waywayanda) right on the trail with several tent sites which would also be central to these two hikes. Nice area and the trail is not difficult in these sections.

thanks shipfixer! i'll definitely check that out. i was hoping to be able to get on the AT even for just a day or two, and that sounds like a good plan. if i do make it out there i'll try and take some pics and put them up here!

If you are making a base camp someplace in Waywayanda, you can do a longer loop to the Bearfort ridge. It is exposed ridge with view of Greenwood Lake and a glacial lake depending on how you create loop. Last week I did Surprise Lake loop with Bearfort Ridge & Quail Trails and there was still plenty of seasonal water sources available.
