Autocrat Coffee, the makers of coffee milk syrup, has just been sold to a British company. Since the coffee milk syrup line is their smallest product line, many are wondering if it will continue to be made. Hope they don't switch to warm beer (a la the English) as our state drink!

The old Narragansett Brewery is long gone. (I heard that they had a water fountain that the workers set up to dispense beer. :D ) I think they brew Narragansett in Texas, now.

From Wikipedia...
"After changing hands several times, the brand was bought in 2005 by a team of local Rhode Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island) investors led by former juice executive Mark D. Hellendrung, who announced plans to expand its market share and reinvigorate the Narragansett brand identity. Since the purchase, the brand has indeed been revitalized with the help of former brewer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewer) Bill Anderson, and some sharp new packaging. Narragansett beer, now contract brewed by Genesee Brewing Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesee_Brewing_Company), has been available again throughout Southern New England since spring of 2006. The lager and light beers are brewed at their brewery in Rochester (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochester,_New_York), New York, while the bock and porter are craft-brewed in Providence, Rhode Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Providence,_Rhode_Island) and Pawcatuck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pawcatuck), Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut).

Not the worst Larger I have ever tasted. In Massachusetts we had Haffenreffer Malt Liquor, the 'Green Death!' That stuff would split your skull by the morning.

Likewise. The manager of the grist mill (http://www.kenyonsgristmill.com/home.html) was so pleased we came out there just to check it out he gave us a bag on the house.
He was stationed in Germany in the 1970s. He recognized my wife's accent (Polish/German border) and they started speaking some German together. Helps that she is cuter that I am, too. ;)

What else can you use to make a coffee cabinet?

For those of you who are wondering what Teacher is talking about, I post the following:

http://www.cbheller.com/drinking_a_cabinet__how_to_talk_like_a_new_england er_47756.htm

Drinking a Cabinet:
How to Talk Like a New Englander You sit down in a Rhode Island ice cream shop, and the server says, “Want a cabinet?” Is she offering you something to drink or a place to store your backpack?

Of course, New England is part of the United States, and English is the native language. But there are some New England words and expressions that you won’t hear anywhere else in the country.

Take “cabinet,” for example. In Rhode Island, cabinet is the word for milkshake – ice cream, milk, and flavored syrup. People say it’s called a cabinet, because you make it in a blender from the kitchen cabinet. In the rest of New England, a milkshake is called a “frappe” (pronounced “frap”).

Rhode Islanders drink coffee milk, too. It’s not coffee with milk – it’s milk flavored with sweet coffee syrup. It’s so popular that in 1993, coffee milk became the official Rhode Island state drink.

If someone in New England offers you “steamers,” would you know that they’re a kind of clam? What about a “quahog” (pronounced “ko-hog”)? That’s a clam, too.

Have you heard the expression “happy as a clam?” That New England saying means you’re especially pleased. The full phrase is “happy as a clam at high tide,” since sand-dwelling clams are comfortably covered with water when the tide is high, hidden from people and other predators.

New England has other unique food words, too. Submarine sandwiches are often called “grinders.” Some people claim that’s because you need a strong set of “grinders” – teeth – to eat these big sandwiches. A “lobster roll” is another type of sandwich – chopped lobster meat mixed with mayonnaise, served on a hot dog bun.

Want to try some “johnnycakes?” They’re cornmeal pancakes. No one knows for sure where the name “johnnycakes” came from, but according to one theory, the word derived from “journey cakes” – what early settlers called the cornbread that they ate when they traveled.

Not all New England expressions have to do with food. If New England kids call something “wicked good,” it’s great. Instead of going “into the basement,” New Englanders go “down cellar.” And they drink water from a “bubbler,” not a water fountain.

So if a New Englander says, “I think a cabinet would be wicked good with these grinders,” just answer “So do I!”

Carolyn B. Heller is a travel and food writer based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She lived in New England for 25 years, and she still thinks it’s a wicked good place.

Not just any bun either. They are only found in N.E. The buns are flat on the sides so you can "buddah" them to grill

there are three sizes of quahogs the first which is the smallest is called a littleneck, then come cherrystones which are medium size and finally the “quahog” (pronounced “ko-hog”)Very large version of the cherrystone. Quahogs differ from actual clams because they have a very thick almost roundish shell. Real clams or steamers are thin shelled, oval shape with a neck or syphon that sticks out from between the shells. Once steamed you pull the clam from the shell, belly and all and then peel the membrane from the neck, dip in melted buddah with a little vinegar. The larger quahogs are generally for chowdahs and stuffed quahogs or Stuffies and can also be used in clam cakes. I am heading back to MA. in just over a week and going to chow down and of course bring lots back. Just FYI, If you get fresh littleneck, cherrystones or quahogs, you can freeze them in their shells uncooked and they will stay fresh for up to one year. Just don't thaw before steaming, place them in the steamer frozen. This idea I found out about last time I was there and think it's "Wicked Pissah"

Leftover coffee, milk, Herseys chocolate "slurp" and ice. Kind of makes me a kindred spirit of sorts or at least a wanna be.

IF you have time, do the Cliff Walk. Seven miles R/T and a great way to see the shore.

And, just in case you can't get to RI, if you happen to be able to get to West Springfield, MA in the later half of September, stop at the Big E and go to the Rhode Island building.

Kenyons has the clam cakes, Del's the lemonade (frozen or liquid), I think someone had the coffee milk and might have even had the weiners and Tucker's Seafood will help you out with the stuffies, all types of fried seafood and even clam chili!
Oh yeah, don't forget the RI Clam Chowdah (which is different than the usual New England or Manhattan types you hear of) and several other hot and cold seafood items just in case you need more choices.

Just a suggestion!

And of course, while you're there you can visit the other 5 New England states for all their specialties (Maple, cheeses, cranberries, blueberries (even in soda), smoked salmon - this list could probably go on all day :)

My late mother-in-law was taking off in the car to the wiener stand near McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket after she was supposed to have stopped driving.

We used to live right around the corner from McCoy. We went once or twice to the wiener joint there, but were big fans of Mei King. For wieners we'd drive to 5 corners in EP or Shorty's on Taunton Ave.....or if we were feeling snobbish, to Olneyville.

When I visited my grandfather's cousins, now located in Rome, they took me to a birthday party in a local park.

The food was remarkably similar to what I had growing up for birthday parties I attended.

On a tray among all the food was the doughy pizza with that wonderful, tangy and slightly spicy sauce.

Teacher, I've told you. The 'r' doesn't go away. It moves. The 'r' that falls off the end of 'blendah' and 'bubblah' ends up on the end of 'idear.' A litah of sodar, to quote Mags!

I don't much care for Rhode Island chowdah. It's missing a few ingredients. (For those not in the know: New England chowdah has milk but not tomato. Manhattan chowder has tomato but not milk. I am a Boston boy and I have to agree with this. Nothing like the honest simplicity of a broth based Rhode Island Chowda. You can hide many sins when you cover them with cream, there is no place to hide in a Rhode Island chowder so it has to be made with only the best ingredients.

Damn Yankee
06-29-2014, 21:51
There is an old law on the RI books that states "It's against the law to use tomatoes in Chowdah" as in Manhattan Style. My wife likes the cream based but, she's from Alabama. I introduced her to Chowdah, Stuffies and clamcakes. Now everytime we go, she never gets enough. I have always preferred the clear broth for chowdah and also my fish Chowdah.

If anyone would be interested, a trek through our Weetamoo Woods in Tiverton could provide and easy yet entertaining 8 miles or so, to be followed by a trip to Evelyns for chowder and cakes....or Grays for ice cream. Would anyone be willing to travel to the one state that has no AT and whose highest elevation is a whopping 812 ft? (no where near this hike, btw)

That would be great fun Teacher, you can count me in.

I also always wanted to do the RI 'highpoint.' I hear that it use to be the hardest highpoint to climb, but now I understand it has opened up to the public.

Well, the highpoint isn't in Weetamoo Woods, Scotty, but on the western side near CT. Of course I'm not married to a hike in Tiverton and could set something up in western RI in the Jerimoth Hill area. Let me check with some locals and see what can be arranged.....day hike or overnight?

Hi Teacher, oh I did not mean the highpoint for this hike. It is just something I have been meaning to do on one of my trips. We can keep this to Weetamo Woods. A nice walk with some great folks topped off with some RI delicacies afterwards sounds fine by me.
