What should I expect for lows during this period on the AT? I have a 32F bag and a 20F three season down bag.

There is a lot of trail in Virginia. Where will you be hiking? If you look at the link above for Grayson Highland, at the highest elevations in Virginia you'll see that the highs are in the 70s and lows in the 50s with record lows in the low 40s and high 30s.

On the other hand up around Snickers Gap you'll see slightly higher temps with record lows in the mid-40s

It will be nice in the valleys, and could be anything above tree line. I've been in the Presidentials in mid-August when hypothermia was a real concern.

Either bag should be enough. I bring a 20 degree bag when I'm in the Whites.

I do my hiking and climbing in the Whites. This site, run by NH Fish and Game, can help you plan:

We have winter weather up here in summer and our winters are down-right arctic.

William Curtis and Allen Ormsbee died of hypothermia in a June 30, 1900 ice storm only 300 vertical feet from the summit of Mt Washington. This famous accident have rise to the AMC hut system.

Many have died in accidents since.

The Whites are beautiful, just be prepared. Up here, the AMC Huts are always your friend, even if you don't have a reservation to spend the night. They provide emergency shelter and knowing where the nearest one is and how to get there can save your bacon.

Bottom line: if you get wet and cold, head down below treeline, by trail or bushwhack. In an emergency, if you can get to the trees, you usually survive.
