Hard to say what it'll be like in 2 1/2 weeks.

Two of us climbed from Rte. 93 to Mt. Liberty summit (4459') last Sunday. Left snowshoes in the car, carried microspikes and crampons but didn't use them. Snow is mostly gone from open ledges and south-facing slopes, but the monorail persists at elevation, and we had snow/ice/monorail for the last 0.3 miles to the summit.

Sorry - trying to expand my knowledge to match my waist-line: "monorail" ? I'm assuming NOT the single rail transport system ?

Best said with pictures. Hopefully these two attach properly. The remaining snow on a trail packed down and the last to melt from the winter traffic.

Like the pictures show... snow right on the trail gets heavily compacted, so it's the last to melt, and remains well after the snow on either side has disappeared.

Funny - I've never heard of it being called "monorail" but I knew exactly what he was referring to - perfect mental image. That condition can be very damaging to the trail, since folks will often try to walk on the sides.
