The mulberries are *just* starting to ripen here. That means that anyone hiking through VA to NJ should be on the lookout the next few weeks. I know I've seen a bunch along the C&O near Harper's Ferry.

We have a lot of paper mulberry trees around here, but unfortunately they're mostly the non-fruit producing males. I had two in my yard, but cut one down, becuase it did't really add to my yard, it just sucked water and shaded out more valuable plants; I will cut the other one down later. It provides nothing to the local wildlife, but if it were a fruit-producing female I'm sure I'd see it as being worth the water it sucks up.

I see the same shape in the young saplings, but they do change shape as the tree matures, this explains it well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AP4zzhvn5KQ

Mulberry syrup and whole wheat pancakes are my favorite. We would spread bed sheet under our trees and throw a line up and over the branches and "shake" . doesn't take long to get enough for a couple quarts of syrup. We would use a 3 eier steam juicer to make fast work of extracting the juice. Good eating fresh any time they are in season....like now:) Happy eating:sun

Still a little early here in PA, not close to being ripe. There is a mulberry tree hanging over a stream where I walk my dogs. Couple of huge carp hang out below waiting for the berries.

Just put up 10 pints of syrup, I love the stuff. A little milder than black berries. There are white mulberries also I think they have a bit more flavor but are so sticky to pick. You pick the soft ones and you will recognize the look when they are ripe. Going to pick more today to make jam and I like to add about 10% raspberries to the jam makes for a great flavor. Happy pickings!!

The blackberries are blossoming now so hopefully in a few more weeks they'll be ready

On the eastern shore of Maryland, the mulberries are fat and still white...I have 15+trees right behind my house and feed a huge variety of wildlife when they ripen!!!

Grew up in Michigan in a small neighborhood with one huge mulberry tree. You could put 6 to 7 kids in that tree and it fed us all when the berries ripened.

We also had a few wild grapes, some wild blueberries and some wild raspberries.

I think the birds are eating mine the second the berries turn even the tiniest bit ripe!!

I made 2 fabulous paleo mulberry crisps this week. Found some with a southwest exposure that are loaded with fat (~1") berries. A-may-zing! Going back for more tomorrow if I have time. I think the pickings will still be good for another week or so...

I know it's a mulberry thread, but soon the blueberry's will be out, they're just starting to turn (little color showin, least around here) and the corn is almost knee high. That means fireworks season, and a friends b-day...ooh rah! brown grass, high humidity, pool parties, the beach, longest day, change the battery in the smoke alarm, and double trash pick up days.

...oh yeah, and give thanks for that damn mulberry tree that finally fell down so I don't track em all through the house and have to clean the carpets.

that's what mulberry's mean to me.:)

This was my blueberries about a month ago and they were pretty good, at least the ones I got -- the birds always get the lion's share...:sun
