I finally caved today and subscribed to "Backpacker Magazine".

What Outdoor/Hiking etc magazines do you subscribe to?

What DID you subscribe to, but never renewed?

In the beginning there were mail order catalogs, The New Complete Walker and Backpacker magazine. All served a useful purpose.

I get backpacker but I have no idea why because I have never paid for a subscription. It might be a throw in for membership in some outfit like ATC or GMC or AMC or PCTA or FTA. Anybody know? I also get all the magazines those groups publish.

I only looked at one site, but the PCT people give a free year of Backpacker with membership to the club.

Not sure what other organizations give it away.

What DID you subscribe to, but never renewed? A few, including Backpacker, all not renewed ("Outside", "NG Adventurer", "Outdoor Photographer", seems like one or two more...). Not really enough good, in-depth info, mostly ads and fads. Backpacker is the least objectionable, though still the info presented is only surface stuff, no depth. I occasionally still but a BP issue, which is dumb because a full year subscription is probably about the cost of 2 or 3 individual newsstand issues!

Yes. Good trip reports. Decent gear information. A Forum. Free.

I use to subscribe to Outside Magazine. Every couple of months they would have at least one article that was worth the price of the subscription to me. For example it was Outside Magazine that originally published the Christopher McCandless story.

"into the wild" is my catcher in the rye.

and the audiobook download.

ive never been more obsessed with a book in my life.

But I dont own that issue of the magazine. I should check ebay someday.

The Economist isn't an outdoor magazine but there was a good article this week on the horrifying garbage dump around Mt. Everest.

I let my Backpacker subscription lapse, just not enough useful info and you end up seeing most of it anyway in their email digests. I do enjoy TrailGroove online.

The only magazine we subscribe to is called The Conservationist.
Published six times a year, Conservationist (http://www.dec.ny.gov/pubs/conservationist.html) is a New York State-focused magazine that is packed with informative and entertaining articles, first-rate photography and stunning artwork.
