I just finished a 160 mile hike (river to river trail). I kept two bits of alum crystal in the pockets, one in each. Seemed to help with chafing, and I heard its antibacterial, and you can use it to filter water and stop the bleeding from cuts. Anyone else have experience with alum crystals?

Tanned squirrel tails with it for fly tying once, didn't know about the other uses...cool.

Mix a bit in cloudy water, and it'll clear it. The floc created will also sweep most, if not all, the bacteria, and do a good job of removing nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. I've used it for stormwater treatments. Removal rates approach 98%.
