View Full Version : How to make a Home made pot?

I didn't know if this should go in DIY or in Cooking, so I just did it here anyway.

Have you made a DIY pot for your cooking system? I may go pick up a Pocket Rocket at Academy tomorrow for $39 but when I looked there today, all I saw was a 12in tall coffee kettle and a small blue metal cup with no lid.

I'm wondering if there is a way to make a home made pot..... All I need it to be able to do is boil water for cups of instant macaroni and cups of oatmeal.

But I don't really know anything about cooking on a stove. Can you post pics/directions on any homemade pot you have made?

Im assuming that to boil fast it needs a lid. But also doesn't it need little air holes so it doesn't explode with pressure?

In my head, Im picturing a tall camp bells soup can somehow converted to a pot to boil water. But that's jus the picture in my head.

Any pics or directions would help.

(I was gonna get the jetfoil for $89, but once I saw the pocket rocket for $39 i decided to try that out.... but only if I can make a homemade pot)

I use a Walmart Imusa mug and home made lid from a foil baking tray. Less than $5.

The Imusa mugs can be tough to find though.

Look around the web and you will find a lot of information on making cook pots out of the mini keg beer cans.

However I agree that the Imusa 12cm (or even 10cm) mug is the way to go. If you can not find them locally youncan get one from Minibull Designs -- https://www.minibulldesign.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=125&idcategory=4 . Tinny also makes a lid for the Imusa pot.

I have used this pot for a few years and love it. Cheap and tough... and 3.7 ounces.

I saw these at walmart/academy for a few bucks..... http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_519001_-1__?N=349815080&affcode=42&kwid=ps_cse&cid=PLA_007950660&gclid=COX2v-Dv-b4CFRAV7Aod_VAARQ

Are these types of cups "flame/burner" useable? the size and price is great. But Im not sure what is useable on a pocket rocket type stove.

Will it boil decent without a lid? (Im seriously clueless to cooking on a trip, but am guessing a lid boils it in minutes)

http://www.amazon.com/Stanco-Non-Stick-Grease-Strainer-Black/dp/B000MVTIOQWalmart IMUSA aluminum mugs - there are two sizes. Or even better, a "grease pot" from KMart. The grease pot will let you do a little more water at once, perfect for coffee or hot chocolate. Plus, the grease pot can be customized to work even better. Here's a link to it from Amazon, but like I said, they're often available at KMart.

Yeah, enameled cups will work as a cook pot; I've used them quite a few times for coffee on a "tommy cooker" in the "trenches." They aren't the best though for modern backpacking. They are enameled steel and heavy. You will get better service from a grease pot or Imusa mug.

I was just looking at youtube videos..... I think I can use a can opener, remove the beer.... and then can just use the can with the lid to boil

Tuckahoe64 I gave up on the Heiny pot system when a 4" bottom Ti pot got the water boiling faster and out performed in the woods. Cold temps and wind frustrated the hell out of me so I went back and made more tests.. If it still works for you that's OK, I think if you did a side by side test with a Heiny vs a IMUSA pot you might go back too.

oh its a Snow Peak Ti

I use a FOSTERS beer can, take a sharp pocket knife and score along the top porferation, where the top meets the side they should be like an little indention their it will take a few turns, when you get it cut take a piece of sand paper and rub the cut so you get all the little burrs off, then you can either use the top as the lid or you can take aluminum foil and make a custom lid works perfectly and then wrap some heat tape around the middle of it so you can lift it while it has boiling in it that way you want have to use gloves and then make a stove from a cat food can, then get some painters cloth to use as a pot stand or you can simply use three tent stakes in a triangle formation, and some aluminum foil as a wind screen then you got a light weight cook set up that will work when you need it too, no matter the elevation, or weather.

Zen Stoves has good info on making pots out of beer cans, unfortunately Heineken no longer makes the "keg can" that was so popular

The Imusa mugs can be tough to find though.

Try Hispanic grocery stores and stores that have Hispanic food sections. Imusa makes a lot of small, lightweight cooking utensils such as pots, cups, egg (fry) pans, etc.

Also, there is a company (from Columbia, SA, if I remember correctly) called "Cosmos" that makes a small grease pot that is made of aluminum and can hold about 2 cups (500 ml) of liquid.

I've been told the same thing (that you can find some cheap pots at a Hispanic grocery store).

You don't need much just to boil water (you can even boil water in a paper cup).

The worst part about trying to use something like a soup can or beer can is that the Pocket Rocket is pretty unstable to begin with. Add in a 'pot' with very rounded edges that I think won't be wider than the Pocket Rocket's support legs and I think things will be even more unstable.

I can understand trying to go really cheap as you get started, but I'm going to suggest that you go ahead and jump up to a 'real' backpacking pot and get the Olicamp XTS (http://www.amazon.com/Olicamp-Hard-Anodized-XTS-1-Litre/dp/B007OJKI2U/ref) pot for about $30. I wish I had bought this pot before I spent the money for a JetBoil for my son. It's relatively inexpensive, reasonably light weight, and has the heat exchanger (for fuel efficiency) built in like the JetBoil.

Otherwise, if you're just looking for cheap... you might as well save the money on a Pocket Rocket and experiment with alcohol stoves. They can be as simple to make a punching a few holes in a can or cat food and are great for only boiling some water. The only place you need to get more complicated with alcohol stoves is when you want to use one for long trips and therefore need it to be as efficient at possible.

+1. I was messing with other pots with no or unstable handles before I got this one. I then was carrying a little metal pot grabber to handle them. Love the fold out handles on this, mine does not have the "fast heating" bottom, but heats so fast I don't see a need for it.

Bad fingers! Should say $5.49 COOKSET. The pot has a lid and a bail. The pot will work just fine for your cooking needs. Leave the rest of kit at home.

There ya go. Academy has the Texsport 5 piece cookset for less than six bucks. Take the small pot, the lid, and the cup if you don't already have one. Good to go.
