I will be hitting the Colorado Trail sometime mid July. It might be cutting it too close.

I thought it was nifty. I went to your link. Other than being chrome colored, does it do anything a regular umbrella does? Can it strap to a backpack like this?

I thought it was nifty. I went to your link. Other than being chrome colored, does it do anything a regular umbrella does? Can it strap to a backpack like this? A friend of mine has one strapped to his ULA pack super light and he swears by it. I want one if anyone has one to buy. Let me know how much.

I’m on my second one but would not buy a third (lost the first one). If you simply open it too fast the support poles can break. It’s of low quality.

GoLite has excellent name recognition in the trekking world. Another highly regarded umbrella but not targeting the hiking world per say with their advertising dollars would be GustBuster. The have high product recognition in the golf world though.
I'll wager if you put a Golite and a GustBuster in a wind tunnel the Golite would shred long before the GustBuster which I think is rated up to 55mph wind gusts. The Metro line is compact and Sunblock is bigger.

LifeLong Dreamer up above makes an excellent suggestion too. My mind is open.
The Swing Free is a nice idea if you don't mind carrying 17.5 ounces. Once again, you need to consider convenience verses weight.
An alternative umbrella is the Mont-Bell at 5 ounces, and there are many others in between.
I've spent way too much time thinking of ways to attach a umbrella to a backpack. Here is one of the better (and cheaper) ways I have come acrss: http://ramblinghemlock.blogspot.com/2014/03/umbrella-rigging.html
As for myself, I use hand loops attached to my straps when hiking to take some of the arm weight off of my shoulder (not big arms, just a messed up rotator cuff). Holding an umbrella while my hand is in the hand loop isn't too awkward and allows me some control to adjust for wind, sun angle, etc.

Have you tried putting the umbrella under your sternum strap that way if you walk into a low tree limb the umbrella is free to turn and both hands are free been doing it for years works good for me
Heres a vote for the liteflex, http://www.campmor.com/euroschirm-swing-liteflex-trekking-umbrella.shtml, and only weighs 8oz. Have used the montbell treking umbrella, however don't particularly care for the arms that have to be individually folded out.

I had heard GoLite is going out of business - which was just confirmed by checking out their website. They don't even offer the Chrome Dome any longer but do have the Half Dome. Anyone have any experience with that one? Seems smaller and maybe not up to the task - but of course the website reviews are pretty solid.

Yep I got that one for my PCT thru next year, but the one I got hooks to the side of my pack not to the hip belt. works great.

I wonder how much Golite stiffed the umbrella company?
Personally I think an umbrella would be too much hassle on the AT if you use hiking poles (lots of forest, low hanging branches, wind, etc.), but since it rains so much, may be worth the weight to stay dry when you're not hiking.

I've used my golite umbrella hands-free by attaching it to my pack strap with a couple lengths of Velcro so I could still use trekking poles. I have used it on trails with much less maintenance than the AT. I used it on the Arizona Trail as much for rain as I did as a parasol. There's another thread on WB with other hands-free suggestions.
