I'm currently at Black Bear Resort in Hampton, Tn. The forestry service has closed a four mile area starting at US 321 to Wilbur Dam due to bear activity. Are there any camp sites between the summit of Pond Flats and Shook Branch Road?
I'm having some knee issues and want to limit my miles for the next few days, so hiking past the closure isn't an option.
thanks

Do you have a copy of the guide? Also, Black Bear has a trail map up on the wall in the camp store. They've also got AWOL's guide in there somewhere.

I have AWOLS guide but don't see any camp sites listed. I was hoping someone a have knowledge of a site not included in the guide

No, the only camping would be at the top of Pond Flats. From there your going down the side of a hill to the road. It might be steep enough to have switch backs on it, been a while since I went over that hill. Did it once and then every time I've been back, I've had Bob Peoples shuttle me around it when he drops off slack packers in the morning.

I don't remember much in the way of camping in that section. What about slacking back to Black Bear?

I do not recall any campsites from Pond to the highway. I would think that if you were not picky you might find a useable flatish spot somewhere. A hammock would be golden in this situation.
