What do you folks feel about resupplying at Dollar General? In much of the US, especially along some "other trails" they seem to be more numerous, closer to the trail, and open longer hours than many other options.

You can get all you need there.

Seems the smaller the "town" the more grocery type stuff they carry.

Anybody know if there are a ton of Dollar-tree/99cent stores along the trail?

I went to Dollar tree here in town and saw they have a ton of food. I bought bags of Jack-links jerky for 99cents etc.

Dollar General seems to locate in the next smaller size town compared to Dollar Tree and other places my mother would call a "real" dollar store.

Dollar General is the hikers friend. I don't remember seeing very many Dollar Tree's.

The only thing I would want to improve on Dollar General is fresh produce. And consistency between stores. Some stores will have a long aisle of frozen and refrigerated foods where another store will just have a stand alone fridge/freezer of milk/juice and a small selection of frozen stuff.

Nuff said. I've never had a problem getting what I needed there. And that includes pouch tuna.

Some stores carry generic Heet methanol for $1.50. It used to be $1 but the price went up.

DG does not usually have Nido nor any other powdered milk.

Dollar General had every basic I needed to resupply. That being said I preferred to resupply in a grocery chain or Wal-Mart for fresh produce etc. But in small towns in the south, I was thrilled to see a DG as opposed to having to resupply at a mini-mart, gas station, whatever...

The Dollar General/ Family Dollar is the cheapest place to resupply just about every town has one and they carry everything a hiker looks for in food plus zip-lock bags, batteries, and many other items, It's the first place i hit when i get to a town, on a five day resupply i spend around 25$ at a Dollar General at a regular Grocery store for the same amount of food it's double that, so yeah i would advise any body to resupply at a Dollar General/Family Dollar to me it's the best place for a hiker that's doing their thru on a budget.

Not many Dollar trees, Dollar General/Family Dollar has the exact same stuff for the same price, to me it's basically the same store and yeah 90% of the towns along the AT and other major trails has one.

The store I stopped at this season on the Florida Trail near Okeechobee was one of the new "Dollar General Market".

They carried a lot more fresh foods and more food in general.

Not sure where they will open along the AT corridor.

So far, Dollar General has only built about 100 of these grocery stores nationwide

Actually probably a little better, since the DG/FD can carry a bigger selection of some items, not being limited to the $1 price point like Dollar Tree is.

Is that a Deal$ ? They are owned by Dollar Tree (originally a separate company that DT bought out), and, like the FD/DG offer items in a variety of prices instead of just everything at $1.

Anything with the word "Dollar" in it is a good resupply.
