View Full Version : Use Doritos to start fires: And 17 other DIY camping tricks

I saw this on Facebook today. Some of these are old tricks but some seem fun.

I like the:
turning tic-tac containers into spice holders
Turning empty prescription bottles into first aid kits
Make your own mosquito repellent
Using Doritos as fire-starters

I'm sure most of you know these already, but I still thought I'd post them.

Your link put me in an endless loop of bad ads for stuff I don't want.
I don't carry Doritos. If I did, I would not waste them by burning them. That makes as much sense as turning good food into awful fuel. Come to think of it, Doritos are the feed stock for ethanol.
Another good reason why I don't visit Facebook.
Read The Complete Walker not Facebook.

Back when I was in the Scouts, I often used a bag of Fritos as a firestarter when I was dealing with wet tinder and kindling. It never burned hot, but it burned long enough to get the rest of the fire going. It's not something that I would consider practical for lightweight backpacking, but it sure was fun at the time.
Another one that I used was Avon's skin so soft bug repellant (my Mom used to pack it in my camping stuff since my troop didn't allow us to carry aerosol cans of bug spray (and for good reason)) , it was a pump spray bottle that was mineral oil based and you could remove the pump cap. A bit of that poured over some toilet paper could try out and light enough tinder and kindling to get a decent fire started even in a moderate rain.

Old, empty, washed prescription bottles are really handy, and when you have a lot (like me) you can put them to good use. I use good old cotton balls smeared with vaseline for fire, and store my fire kit (matches, mini Bic lighter, kindling, firesteel) in an large 'script bottle. Since I must have my coffee in the a.m., I also mixed sugar & creamer in another old smaller 'script bottle. I just pour some in my cup instead of fooling with packets. I use another to measure out Heet for my cat stove.

Funny thing is, I put my prescription meds in a plain plastic container...

OK. I will concede that if I ever find myself in a must start a fire situation and I just happen to have a bag dry corn chips handy that I just might be able to start a fire while I wait for my coffee water in my Trangia kettle to get hot on my Svea 123 stove.

the link is working on a real computer. My phone didn't like it last night.

9. Use a shoe organizer to keep track of everything.
I have been doing that since forever. The only solution that Mrs. Wayne approves.

Dryer lint & TP rolls, another oldie but goody, makes more sense than burning edible food.
Mason jars? Gallon Milk jugs? Large plastic containers formerly filled with coffee I won't drink? Ketchup bottles? Etc. are not aimed at self-contained travelers.

18. Make your own single-serve coffee bags (http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Your-Own-Coffee-Single-Bags).I have a box of filters left over from a coffee machine I no longer use. I may try this. Although, I reckon it will be heavier and bulkier and more mess to haul out than Starbuck's Via Italian Roast coffee.

The main thing to do: Just get out there!

Just remember to store them in the same bottle to cut down on weight !! In your hip pocket.

I like a crushed ping-pong ball - burns hot and large, just not very long.
