View Full Version : Labor Day Weekend: Georgia Section Group Hike

Ricky&Jack

Well, Another forum member (AO2134) and I had been planning to hike all/part of the GA section of the A.T. over Labor Day Weekend, for the past few weeks.

Last night we finally got together and created an "Event" page on Facebook to see who is interested in joining.

We know that Labor Day Weekend will be crowded on parts of the trail, but we want to do it anyway.

So far, we have:

Going: 4
Maybe: 4
(Plus 3 others from these forums who are trying to go)

I'm thinking that we can set up a few car pools, and also allow people to hop on/off along the trail depending on their time allotted to hike.

If you think you may want to join us, please feel free to RSVP "Going" or "Maybe" on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/events/248250332041353/?ref_dashboard_filter=upcoming

Or if you don't use Facebook, feel free to comment below and we will keep you updates.

(I think we will try to have part of the group leave Friday and Saturday morning, depending on the number of attendees and the time they have available.)

Bump!

I will be there. Wife told me to shut up about the trip and if I tried to back out she will be pushing me out the door.
My plan is to drive up Friday after work, sleep and hit the Approach trail early Saturday morning. I have all week and will more than likely need all of it. If not, I want to push on to see how far I can go.

Please keep me informed off your schedules.

*I guess I replied to the message individually instead of to the tread. Let's try this again*

Once we get all those who would like to join, I think we should get a list of miles per day and how long on the trail each person would like to stay/have available for hiking. We may have different paces and that is okay. Georgia has many parking lots all over the trail and we can park cars all along the trail for different bail out points for different people.

Speaking for myself, I have 4 days: Friday-Saturday-Sunday-Monday (labor day). I would like to get from Springer to Deep Gap NC (about 86 miles) in those four days. I don't think that is very likely but it is my goal. I have taken Tuesday off as well, but I hope to be able to go to work that day. That would be 4 21.5 mile days.

I understand we all have different paces and different goals. Some want to take their time and really enjoy the experience. I understand that. I just don't have the freedom to do that work wise.

Plus for those who are not familiar with GA AT, there are parking lots at many locations on AT. For example Springer Mt. Partking lot (the beginning) Woody Gap (~20 miles in), Neels Gap (~31 miles in), Hogpen Gap (~39 miles), Unicoi Gap (~53 miles), Dicks Creek Gap (~70 miles), Deep Gap NC (~86 miles).

There are locations for us to all store some vehicles so everyone can get off when they need to. Also, the hiker's hostel rents out bunks for $18 a night and has a shuttle service to take you to your car if you get to an access point.

I'd suggest start hiking Friday morning and have all these arrangements done Thursday night.

However, it sounds like most if not all people want to start Saturday so I will have to change my plans. I will likely just hike from Springer to NC/GA border, and back to Bly Gap to get shuttled back to Springer.

Just thinking out loud. Working on a plan.

Ricky&Jack
07-11-2014, 16:52
we got plenty of time to settle it.

But don't change your plans. I can not imagine everyone wanting to start saturday. There's bound to be plenty who want to leave friday.

I have done a few 20+ day hikes. Never with a full pack. I did a 30 mile with 8lbs and could barely walk next day.

Every single person I talked to thinks I am crazy, but my personality won't let me not try. I am very goal oriented. I may come back from this trip with 15 mpd average. Maybe less. I have my goal, and I going to try like mad to get it.

Well.

As long as you have a contignency plan, then go for it.

But, it might be time to think realistically.

It's fine to go there with a goal.

But after day 1 he will know if his goal will need to change.

But, it might be time to think realistically.

Honestly, I don't mean this in a negative way. I know you are trying to help me.

Very few things in life give me more joy then doing something someone tells I cannot do. I use it as motivation.

Once I finish getting all my gear, I will pack it all up and do a day hike from Woody Gap to Neels Gap. If I notice my pace is decent, I may add the Lake Winfield Scott loop and make it a 24 + mile day. If I see my pace is decent, I will just do the 20 - 22 mile day. If I see it sucks, I will do 2 15 mile days and make a weened out of it

Sounds like you know the possibilities of going farther than your body can handle. I have done multiple section hikes and done 20+ mileage days on my last day several times. I did them and survived, but would not have been able to hike very far, nor very comfortably the next day had I still been on the trail. The consequences are always easier to handle when I am back home.

Sounds like a geat hike and you certainly seem jacked up for it. Enjoy it, but don't push yourself too hard.... unless it is the last day.

that pic was from a website my friend ran. it was "Labor Day Hikes: 5 trails to love"

I just used it cause it had the words "Labor day" and "Hike".

That was actually a picture from Washington state.

We are still 5.5 weeks away til the trip, but I wanted to bring something up:

The Georgia Section is 79 miles long and with 15miles per day it should take 5.5-6 days to complete. Most of us (Including myself) will only be available for 3-4 days, and will jump off the trail early. If you are determined to finish the Georgia Section, I'm sure there are several in our group who plan to do it all. So If you want, you can either (Park at Neels Gap and then when you reach the NC border pay about $80 for a shuttle back to your car..... Or you can park at the NC border and carpool with us to Springer mountain, so you would be hiking to your car).

We have plenty of time to figure it out. But I didn't want you to think the plan is to hike ALL of the Georgia section as a whole group. Some will hop off and off along the way. Not everyone will do the full 79 miles. But the goal is to basically start at Springer Mountain and hike as much as your time allows.

So please join us even if you want to hike for a day, several days, or the whole 79 miles

Hi, I'm Brad from NYC - I've done a lot of A.T. section hiking and I'm interested in joining from Springer and getting off at Unicoi Gap (52.9 miles). However, I'm not interested in doing more than 12-15 miles per day. After that, it's just too much and it starts to lose the fun for me. Anyway, I can fly down but I would need to be picked up from Unicoi Gap and shuttled to Springer the morning of the hike. Does anyone else plan on this pace and ending at Unicoi so we could work out the logistics of cars?

Has anyone ever hiked this route at this time of year? I'm a little concerned about the temperatures.

BTW - I've put myself as a maybe on Facebook since I'm concerned about working out the logistics. I'm on Facebook as Brad Powell.

Yeah, I have to work Friday and then Saturday sometime between 3-5 PM so I probably won't even get to hit the trail until 7 or so Saturday, may stay home Saturday and do Sunday/Monday just depends, still mulling it over and I still don't have a sleeping pad which might affect my decision lol.

Hey All!

Since we have a fair amount of people possibly coming in from out of town, it may be worthwhile to start this planning phase earlier. We have potentially a very large group going. That is a lot of schedules to coordinate. Everyone has different goals for this hike. It will be impossible to coordinate in the last minute. So it would be helpful if you guys messaged me or Ricky Sanftner (https://www.facebook.com/rickysomething) with the answers to these questions or left the answers here.

Some questions we would like to have answered to better organize this event would be: (1) When do you plan to start (Day and time Friday or SAT)? (2) Where do you plan to start? (amicalola, Springer, border hike south, etc) (3) How long do you plan to hike (days available for hiking)? (4) Any estimate on the approximate mpd you would like to accomplish? (5) How far do you plan to go (Neels Gap, Unicoi Gap, etc)? (6) Do you have a vehicle that can make it up forest roads? (7) Do you plan to have someone pick you up and drop you off or do you plan to leave your car on the AT's numerous parking lots?

Please either post here your answers or message Ricky or me.

Thanks guys!

Ricky/John,

Sounds like it might be a good idea to create teams of folks that expect to start on a certain time and get off at a certain place on a certain day. They don't have to stay together during the day, but they would periodically check in with each other, at camp for example. You could put this together in a shared spreadsheet, like a google doc or something. Might make things easier to organize and for folks to get together. Just a thought.

Hi, I'm trying to gather some info from members that plan to attend this years GA Appalachian trail group hike over labor day weekend. Because we plan to have over 20 hikers this year, in 2 groups, I'm trying to gather some info ahead of time to help keep it organized. If you can, could you PLEASE answer the questions below A.S.A.P? Your info can change later on. But this is a preliminary questionnaire to help us get the ball rolling.....

Name:
Phone #:
Emergency Contact Phone #:
Location:
Will you be bringing a friend?:
Will You be bringing a dog?:
Which will you be using? Tent or Hammock:

We should have a group leaving Springer Mountain on Friday August 29th and a group Saturday August 30th (Labor Day is Monday Sept 1st). So far, what is your best guess on which day do you think you would leave Springer? Friday or Saturday?:

What day do you think you will need to hop off the trail to end the hike? Some people are stopping on different days to get back to work etc. (Most people are stopping on Monday):

I appreciate your prompt reply if possible. I'll send out a more solid question sheet as we get closer to the date.

Thank you
-Ricky Sanftner

I am working on convincing my husband to go! We would be driving from Western Michigan, leaving Thursday pm and arriving at Neels Gap around 9am. We would arrange for a shuttle to Springer, with the hopes beginning our hike by noon.

Hiking Friday (half day), Saturday, and Sunday, we want to drive back on Monday because we both need to be to work Tuesday (husband works at 5am).

I would love to have others in the midwest join us to help with gas money!
This is a really cool thing you are planning!!!

Looks like you all have quite a group hiking.

If the weather looks decent I think I'll hike down to Springer starting Thurs afternoon, spend the night there on Friday and hike back home Sat & Sun. I think I'll use my hammock so I won't bring the dogs. So I guess for those keeping score, count me as leaving Springer Sat morning and getting off Sun at Grassy Gap.

TRIP REPORT: I did a section of the AT this weekend. Woody Gap (21 miles from Springer) to Neels Gap (31.7 miles) and back to Woody Gap. I wanted to do it as a day hike. With side trails, it would have been about 22+ mile hike. It was my first time on AT with a full pack (35lbs). I've been exclusively a day hiker prior to this.

I started at Woody Gap (21 miles) at approximately 10:15am (very late start). I made it to summit of Blood mt (29.3 miles) at approximately 2 pm. Messed around at the top for a bit and made it down to Neels Gap (31.7 miles) at about 3 pm. Made it back to summit of Blood Mt. (29.3 miles) 4:30 pm Messed around for a little more and started descending Blood Mt. Got to Slaughter Creek (28.5 miles) for water resupply taking me to about 5:15 pm. Made it to Jarrard Gap (26.7 miles) at 6 pm. Made it to Dockery Lake (23.9 miles) at 7:40 pm. I am officially zombie hiking at this point. I consider stopping here for night. I decided my car is 3 miles away I got this. I still have 1.5 hours of sunlight. I got this. I continue hiking. I notice I am going up and up . . . and up for a long time. I am tired. Another 1/2 a mile I pull out my AT guide and I notice it is all up hill for next 1.5 miles. I was deflated and losing light. I push on for another .3 miles and I see 4 guys setting up gap and they had a fire. I talked to them briefly and they (and my body) convinced me to call it a day. I had blisters, but nothing to awful. I had worse, but they bothered me. Knees a little sore, but fine. My shoulders and traps though. Dear god, putting that pack down for the last time that day was an amazing feeling. I camped there for the night, and I was happy I did because we enjoyed talking around the fire pit until about 10 pm. We were all tired. They were on day 2 of a section hike of Springer to Neels Gap. We went to sleep. I did not sleep. . . at least not well and not until 4-5 am. We "woke" up 7:30. No breakfast packed up and I was on my way. Said goodbye and goodluck. I had about 2.2 miles left. Of which, 1.2 was straight up. I did the up easily enough. However, the last mile was the a brutal descent which took me forever. I also stopped and talked to some day hikers who asked me for directions. I arrived at my just she of 10:00 am.

Day 1: 18.3 miles. a little under 10 hrs. Average hiking speed 1.8 miles per hour, including all stops.
Day 2: 2.2 miles. 1.45 hrs.

Overall amazing hiking. A little easier from Woody to Neels than Neels to Woody, but that may just be the difference of having just started vs just finished. Plenty of water sources at for the first 3ish miles after woody, then fairly dry until base of blood Mt. I was very disappointed in myself that I didn't finish it as a day hike, but overall I was happy I stopped and shared a campfire with those no longer strangers.
