Can anyone point me in the direction of (preferably bulk) miso powder?

I found out about "Cold Mountain Miso", but it appears you can't order any.

Some of the best dry Miso soup mix. http://www.edwardandsons.com/es_shop_miso.itml I really like the versions w/ seaweed or tofu. I regularly find the four dry packets in a box for about $4-4.50. Some stores sell the dry packets individually too so you might be able to sample before you buy a larger amt.

The other brand I see often in main stream conventional grocery stores, and will gladly consume, are made by the company Sushi Chef. Their White Miso, Clear, and Wakame(Seaweed) dry soup mixes are good. Again, some stores sell the dry packets individually too so you might be able to sample before you buy a larger amt. http://www.sushichef.com/#!sushi-chef-products/cjg9

Personally, I stay away from brands like Kikkomon because they contain MSG. Watch out for the potentially high sodium contents in some brands too.

Ok, so I will be at Earth Fare in the AM. What do I do with Miso?
Thanks.

Ahh, it's dry soup mix. Umm, make soup. :-?

It also comes in a paste but I assume on longer trips the dry soup mix is what backpackers will prefer. It's a good flavor substitute for many of the salt/MSG laden cheap Ramen Soup type dry flavoring packets; both those brands I listed have better nutritional profiles too. You can also add it to rice dishes or use it as a base to make a heartier soup. I'll take a packet of the Miso Soup w/ Seaweed and add chunks of fresh caught trout(fish, sardines in olive oil work too), a can(or foil packet) of baby clams or crab, some greens(brook lettuce and ramps work nicely!), fresh grown sprouts, and rice or buchwheat noodles(or some parboiled brown rice) for a great hearty fisherman's soup dinner.

Thanks. I will give it a test drive.
BTW, Earth Fare rocks. Even for omnivores like me. 10% discount for Vets.
