Found this beauty this morning in Worcester, MA.

Since I use my ALDHA hat for scale, I figured I could post it on an AT forum.

I have seen big fungus before, but never on so beautiful.

Wow, those are great fungus pictures. I've got nothing to compare. I guess I'm just not a fun guy.

Here I thought that I was the only person that took pictures of fungus. I have (at least I have tried to) attached a picture of a similar fungus that I saw on he Old Loggers Path last weekend. I did not put anything next to it to compare its size but it was close to 18" cross.

I don't know how you slow pokes ever expect to get any where with all this stopping to smell the fungus.

I also stopped to smell (and photograph) the roses. :banana It was my knees that slowed me down more than fungi and roses.

Once on the job this fella (Mountain Joe we called him) brought in what he called "Momma Funge" he breaded and fried them, they were as big and as thick as T-Bone steaks...covered the whole paper plate, and were very tasty. He said he collected them at the base of oak trees and had been doin' so for many years, and was taught about them by an old timer and friend of his....there were good and quite the meal for lunch that day.

That is beautiful. I wish I could manage the depth of field like that with my POS camera-- in theory I can but not in practice. Just seeing that flower would be enough though.

I believe it's a thistle flower. And Rickb---it was taken on a Panasonic point and shoot, the Lumix LX3 (or LX5).

This otherworldly scene materializes every year on the long-dead stump of a huge ash tree in the corner of my yard. The name "chicken of the woods" doesn't really do it justice. Not a great photo, but you get the idea.

...found theses in the yard tonight while cuttin' grass. Notice how the surrounding foliage of the first is spore covered...hmm. Both are about 6" across.

It's nice being able to open the lens all the way, but on my camera it takes deep shade or a very cloudy day. It does snap the flowers out of the background!

You want a neutral density filter; then you can shoot with the lens wide open on a bright day.

Thanks all, for sharing the fungus amungus photos. I've always loved funguses, and I too, make photos of them. A few years ago I hiked a section north of Woody Gap (can't remember exactly which one). It was fall, and had had a good bit of rain for several days prior to our being there. I swear, I had never, ever, seen so many funguses amungus as I did on that section. There was something to see every few feet - large, small, and dozens of colors. It was a trip I've never forgotten.

Since this thread is still going. Here is a picture of a fungus that I saw along the Long Trail near the Winooski River. I almost walked right by it when I saw that someone had carved on the front of it. Sorry for the sideways picture, I am not seeing where I can rotate the attachment.

For those in my neck of the woods, this 10/22 talk looks like it could be good. Very good.

The author (www.lawrencemillman.com (http://www.lawrencemillman.com)) looks to have written a variety of interesting books that go far beyond fungi-- including one that had a forward by one of my favorite writers-- Paul Thereoux. That raises my expectations.

The National Wildlife Refuge where he is giving his talk on Oct 22nd is also neat-- it was an ammunition storage depot in WW II and is crisscrossed by closed paved and flat dirt/gravel roads through the woods that go by all the bunkers. Really great for family bike outings the woods. It just opened to the public within the past 5 years or so.
