I actually didn't find out about WB until my 2006 thru, a guy i was hiking with started talking about it with a fellow hiker, i thought it sounded interesting, But the interesting part is i didn't join WB until after my 2012 thru.
So yeah for me it would be "word of mouth".
But where's the POLL.

As a twelve yr old I was hiking with family at DWG to Mt Tammany, Sunfish Pond and Buttermilk Falls when I started seeing these white stripes painted on trees. When I asked some other hikers, who happened to be grizzled AT thru-hikers, what this was about they said it was the Appalachian Trail and those blazes mark the trail all the way from Ga to ME. They were polite but were obviously on a hurried intensely focused mission that I would later comprehend. They told me if I wanted to know more check out the website WhiteBlaze. :)

The Google!

I was surfing the net during a quiet time doing security desk work (about 3 am) when I came across WB. :-? I signed up...about #600 to do so.

It's been fun, :banana and a bit strange  over the years, but I never regretted joining the gang at WB! :D

It was #3 for me.

#3 - I was a member of Trail Place back when Wingfoot owned the site and White Blaze briefly came up in a thread before it was deleted.

May have been referenced from Wingfoot's Trail Place, but it was in 2002 (the predecessor of Whiteblaze.net) and I can't remember that long ago! What I do remember is that I was just getting back to my life-long goal of section hiking the AT and it became a great resource for me.

I heard some other hikers talking about it, although I now forget where. It's been nearly 10 years for me.:)

I love forums. I love trails. WB is perfect

Moved over from Wingfoots board in the early 2000's. He closed down.. and besides that, near the end he censored a lot and added his own opinions, which turned off a lot of people. I still enjoyed his board though, and inspite of that and he did quite a bit to make many aware of the AT, and what it has to offer, via the Internet. I sensed that in the end, he was not happy about how much impact his board had on the AT, especially with the huge influx of hikers... and the many that did not practice LNT.

I think that was "Trail Place" or something similar. It's been too many years. :)

I don't think I remember

Word of mouth. It was after I hiked the AT in '08, and I was on a day hike with Mags up in Boulder and he mentioned it.

With 50 votes now tallied we have a legitimate sample to look at.

The results :

Internet search engine -- 50% votes
Another hiking/ Bp forum 26% votes
Everything left combined. 24% votes

Probably no surprises here .
