We would like to announce that as of 3:30 this afternoon, we are no longer the owners of Rainbow Springs. We appreciate all of you who have stayed with us and used our services. We enjoyed meeting you. It was a fun 18yrs, but it's time to move on. We ae building a house about 6 miles east of here. This email address will be good until the 31st. Then you can email me privately at [email protected] We hope that when you are out hiking in this area, you will continue to visit Rainbow Springs.

Good luck!

Does this mean the hostel will be closing or will there be new hiker fi\riendly owners?

They plan to open it as close to March 1 as possible. They are currently looking for a couple to manage the campground. We
suggested on couple who we think would be great, he hikes!!
Thanks, Jensine & Buddy

Can you share with us the names of the new owners and how to get in touch with them and if they plan to continue accepting mail drops ?

Thanks in advance

The Corp. name is Rainbow Springs Campground LLC.
We haven't accepted mail drops for years. I doubt that
the new owners would want to deal with the hassle of
mail drops when they're going to busy enough just learning the ropes. I don't know who the managers will be yet. As Feb 1
or there about their email will be our old one and the phone #
will remain the same. Jensine

Thanks Jensine ...

I'm planning on doing some re-supply there on my way through in April. Hope they have the camp store stocked so that I don't have to go into Franklin.

To my knowledge they will have plenty of resupply.
If you have any questions, you may want to call or
email them shortly before March 1.

Footslogger,

As long as they don't change inventory, you will be happy with Rainbow Springs, a mail drop isn't needed.

Thanks Top ...I wasn't planning on a mail drop there anyway. Was just asking for a friend. My first drop isn't until Kincora and that's only my maps. I'm buying as I go this time. Went the heavy mail drop route in 2001 and never again !!

Thanx for supplying this info, esp. as regards the acceptance of mail drops. Your post will undoubtedly help a great many folks.

All NEW info supplied by SMokinSteve is the same as it has been
for the past 15 yrs or more , with the exception of mail drops. Doubt many will get this info in time for a mail drop, as both the
Companion and Thru-Hikers Guide has no mail drops listed. There really is no need for a mail drop at this location.

I visited Rainbow Springs CG last week and the place looked great. The new owner's wife was real nice and are trying to accomodate hikers. The mini store was well stock as it was in the past and they were asking for suggestion.

I think they even put heat in the bathrooms, which will please many.

The only things missing were Jensine, Buddy and the homemade chili...

I liked the chili too. I have great shot in my slideshow of me in full raingear regalia (doing laundry) with a bowl of chili and a cold beverage. I have a very happy look on my face.

That's one of the great things about the trail. The simple things bring so much pleasure.

Thanks max patch & jensine for the info! That's about the best place, that I can tell, to get on the trail in order to do all of GA.

Last post here was early in 2003. Anything new on Rainbow Springs? I assume it's still open the under the new management?

What a waste, nice place. I enjoyed "jawing" and getting up to date with Jensine.

Has anyone been by there lately to see if it has become McMansions?

Almost There
11-09-2005, 21:53
When I was up there in June it was for sale and was empty, no one was there when we drove by. It was all locked up.

When I ran into Barry this year at Miss Janet's he said they are tearing the whole place down and building some kind of condo/townhouses on the site

jensine
11-10-2005, 16:13
The place is still for sale for 1.1. million. But everything is gone from the store. All picnic tables and firerings are gone. The outfitters store has been
removed. But all else is still there. Will really be a sad day when they tear down the cabins. The latest plans that we have recently heard are that 5 septic permits have been issued and they are dividing the land into 5 home sites. Prices in Macon county are skyrocketing, but I think it will be a while before they find someone to pay $250,000 for a lot. It really kills us whenever we go by there.

dont hold your breath. people pay that all the time.

is it still okay to park there? could i park there during the winter months and take the kimsey creek trail to the AT?

orangebug

It is much safer and more convenient to park at the Backcountry parking lot and walk over to the Kimsey Creek Trail.

Lilred

Or park in Standing Indian Campground. That's where the Kimsey Creek trail comes out.

The campground is usually closed this time of year. The backcountry parking lot stays open, just across the road from the campground.
