This past weekend we took a short trip to Mt Magazine, AR, the highest point in AR, via the Cove Creek Trail. We had a great time with perfect weather. The trail was in better shape than many other trails we have hiked in the state, and was well marked with white diamond tin "blazes". It had a few blowdowns from Rita/Katrina/Dennis, but nothing too major. We saw no one on the entire trail until we reached Mt Magazine State Park at the top. The trail is about 11 miles long, or 22 miles round trip. There is no way to do a loop. The trail was relatively easy hiking, with only one moderate section towards the end, as you hike up the mountain. There were a couple of views down into the valleys atop some rock outcroppings, but it was mainly hardwood forest hiking. There were several areas of pine forest. It was extremely dry this past weekend, with virtually very little water to be found. There are plenty of streams (>5 or so) along its length, but most were bone dry. All in all, a good weekend trip.
