What's the best week to do this section to catch the best fall color? Would October 11th be too soon? Would October 31st be too late?

Hard to say, check out this thread as I believe there is a site linked to each area of the country and the peak fall colors

I'd go the weekend of the 18th for peak color in a normal year. Don't know if this year is normal? :)

Thanks for the info! You guys are a great resource. Looking at taking a trip either over Coumbus Day weekend or end of October. Wonder if anybody else is planning to be on the trail in that section during October?
I'll be heading north from Winding Stair Gap to Stecoah gap the weekend of the 18th - picked that weekend hoping to catch the color as well. This site offers weekly updates and you can sign up for email updates as well. Good luck.
