Just got my daily dose email from Steep&Cheap. On sale for the next few days in their "Gear Cache" are baselayers.:) They have Smartwool and Icebreaker tops in various weights and designs from $39 to $49 and up. I think I'll have to pass as I have about 4 of each in different styles. I wear them around the house and town too when winter gets here. Happy shopping.:banana

Mens boxer briefs as well, 47% off...sure their still expensive, but if they're the only pair you wear for a week...priceless.

I'll agree with you LW, but hypothermia and a SAR could cost a bit more and put SAR at risk every time they have to get someone not prepared with good gear. Seems like in the last few years many more calls for SAR in the southern section of the AT.

But we did have stanky under draws, and walkin talkies...I never carried either.

No instant news and interweb either. Most hikers back then were more experienced and rarely needed help.

Cheap wool from the army surplus store is good too.... I scored a small trashbag worth of wool stuff for $25. Caps, scarvess, jacket liner, glove liners, mittens, etc.

And this has nothing whatsoever to do with the present.

If better clothing is available now, and it's available at reasonable prices, then it's a logical progression to purchase and use it. If you don't like it, stay out of the topic.

BTW 10-K, where is there an Army surplus around here? I used to get stuff at the Sunday Flea market south of Jonesboro on 11E. Now I've got lazy and lurk at E-bay and other webstores. Dang internet lets me do most shopping from home since there is not much offerings around Greeneville...
