Bring your own water. :)

As I recall that's a completely dry 12ish miles isn't it?

There is a creek that flows steady at the end of the first 2 miles where the trail comes out on FS 675. The top of the mountain is dry. We have been told there is a seasonal spring on top. We plan to look for it and hopefully mark a path to it. The trail is 11.2 miles

I hiked that section right after it opened a few years ago and stashed water at Bull's Gap.

The Alabama Pinhoti is a real jewel, it's a great trail.

Three of us hiked Rebecca SOBO today and the weather was perfect.
Leaf color is starting to brighten up but in some of the low areas everything is still spring green.
The overall trail condition was the best I have seen this section. There are some easy step overs
and the only troublesome ones are between FS 675 and the top of the ridge west of the micro tower.
The path through the briar patch w. of the micro tower is wide and clear.
We saw one hiker that had set up his tent on high ground about a half mile east of 603A TH.
Thanks again to all who worked to make this one of the better sections on the Pinhoti.

That's good to hear. This was the most hell-acious part of the trail when we hiked it last fall. Absolutely unbearable.

I wonder if they found any bodies when they cleared it out?

The first time I went through it seemed like a good place for a vampire smorgasbord.

Over the last 5 years I rate this section as the MOST improved.

Northbound report.

very seasonal stream at 33 07.617 086 13.556; probably better described as... only after recent rain.

Blowdowns
bd N33 08.809 W086 10.115
bd 33 08.830 086 09.982
bd 33 08.844 086 09.928
bd 33 08.924 086 09.865
bd 33 08.967 086 09.829

bd 08.967 is just after turn to head up switchback.

I am thinking that I missed one other but it was not much or I would have tagged it.

I think the 08.844 was the complex that required a knee craw and full off trail to get around. The others were easy.

Any menition of water on trail or at campsite should be removed -- absolutely.

Taxi will bring a couple of gallons of water to Bull Gap or carry you to Slycauga for $25. Jackson Tarrace Motel is $46/nite and is near ATM, DQ, BK, MD, Fred's, etc

The cost for a southbound day hiker to leave a gallon jug of water at the CS near Bull Gap is $0.99.

...Yeah some random hiker might get to it first, and it could never be counted on, unless it was done proper but it is done on the PCT and along The Lonelist HIghway in America for bicycle riders.

Here is the spot for the seasonal spring FWIW, I tagged it in 2008 according to my gps program.

I don't go up there often enough to do a study on when it dries up compared to previous rainfall. It is easy to locate because it is in the beginning of a cane thicket on the East, or southeast, side of the ridge, 100 ft in elevation below, about 300 ft walk from, a flat saddle in the ridge trail. This saddle is on the natural, or hand-cut section about half-way between the east tower and the bulldozer cut east section. I would be pretty confident it would trickle all winter once we get 5+ inches of rain in Nov or Dec.

Gubbool, after looking at your location for a very seasonal stream, on my computer map, I see our maps/ points don't match up each other since your lat. long. point shows on my map right on top of CR511 Goodwater hwy, about a mile west of Trammel Mtwy?? Sorry but I don't know the details of why this doesn't line up. My points are supposed to be on WGS84, whatever that means. I agree that if you are using a shuttle to start with anyway, a water stash at Bull Gap is wisest plan. I have posted my DeLorme Topo map (somewhere?) showing all this if anyone needs to see it again, let me know

Many thanks to anyone who was sneaky enough to bring a backpack sprayer of brush killer to work on the blackberry briars, if that rumor has any truth?

Hiked from Trammel to Bulls Mon/Tuesday. I believe the Trammel parking is a little South of the coordinates on the FS Map. Great section very well blazed with a wide path almost all of the way. The weather was interesting. It rained slowly all night with nothing ever showing on the radar or predicted. There was a stretch almost to Bulls where the trail had parrallel blazing possibly from re routing. The briars were indeed under control. As mentioned it's apparent a lot of work has been done on this section.

I noticed the Fee Area signage -how does this apply along the Pinhoti?

Below are a few pictures.

Nice report and great pics!
There are 3 areas where the trail has been re-routed to eliminate steep climbs
and to have some separation between the hikers and horses as they have been
using the jeep road since before the Pinhoti was there.
I did not notice the payment unit sign in Oct. when I went through.
Since that is in the Hollins wildlife management area, I assume it applies to hunters.

The payment unit sign has to do with the Forestry Commission, timber management and logging.

I ne some help on this section of the Pinhoti. Our hiking club is planning a trip to Rebecca Mt. next month. Can someone provide some guidance on directions to the trail head, best places to camp, etc?

I added both the THs to Google a few months back, links below. There were several good places to camp, but only two established sites that I recall. Here is a little more information that I didnt post above.

Vince, What direction will you be coming from? I can give you directions to the 603A trailhead and the Bulls Gap TH. There are two established campsites. There are two streams you will walk by if you begin on 603. The top of the ridge is dry. You can stash water at the top easily. There are two roads that you can use.
