Doctors across the nation are seeing a surge of sudden meat allergies (http://www.acaai.org/allergist/allergies/Types/food-allergies/types/Pages/meat-allergy.aspx) in people bitten by a certain kind of tick. This bizarre problem was only discovered a few years ago but is growing as the ticks spread (http://www.cdc.gov/ticks/maps/lone_star_tick.html%20) from the Southwest and the East to more parts of the United States. In some cases, eating a burger or a steak has landed people in the hospital with severe allergic reactions.

The culprit is the Lone Star tick (http://www.cdc.gov/ticks/maps/lone_star_tick.html). The bugs harbor a sugar that humans don't have, called alpha-gal. The sugar is also is found in red meat — beef, pork, venison, rabbit — and even some dairy products. It's usually fine when people encounter it through food that gets digested. But a tick bite triggers an immune system response, and in that high-alert state, the body perceives the sugar the tick transmitted to the victim's bloodstream and skin as a foreign substance, and makes antibodies to it. That sets the stage for an allergic reaction the next time the person eats red meat. At the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, "I see two to three new cases every week," said Dr. Scott Commins, who with a colleague, Dr. Thomas Platts-Mills, published the first paper tying the tick to the illness in 2011.

I have one bite that still itches on my back. Doctor said didn't get the entire critter out. I hate the ones I can't reach myself. An old trick is to spray em with poison. Wait a few hours. They come out easier when dead. Talking what I call a dog tick. Still get the impression tick bites remain a work in progress for the medical and science people. Did the self anti botic after this bite. Now I'm thinkin should have seen doc earlier, but I just not a fan of the medical business.
Hope it didn't cause the asymetric hearing issue thats cropped up.Left ear is 4 miliseconds behind right. Kinda living with reverb and plays havic with guitar in a group setting. Ya know hearing each beat twice. Where I live ticks are just a part of nature. Chance my cat got a couple even with the vet monthly treatment which I was told is really just made for deer ticks. So now we use spot also on advice of vet.
