Almost every year there is someone who intends to do it. I'm not sure how many actually make it all the way. Hiking in winter, solo, is not as much fun for most people as being part of the thruhiker community.

It's called a yo-yo.

NOBO thruhiker Finn announced his intention to yo-yo in 2014. I know he made it back south to at least Vermont. Anyone know the latest?

In 2013, I met a guy on the trail in VT attempting a yo-yo. Can't recall his trail name. He was a triple-crown hiker who had successfully yo-yoed the AT previously. He started @ Springer Mt on May 19th & was already about 1600 miles in at the time (July 5th). I didn't see him on the trail again. Unknown if he slipped by me on the way back or decided to stop his yo-yo attempt.

I asked him which trail was the hardest to him. He said the AT was. Steep verticals bothered him more than the longer miles of the PCT & CDT.
