I've been trying to find a small, lightweight digital thermometer to carry with me that keeps track of highs and lows so I'll know how cold it got at night, and I'm not having much luck. Anyone have any recommendations?

This is something I've wanted too. Make it small, accurate, lightweight, and low cost and I'm with you. :)

When I want high-low temp readings, this little Acu-rite is what I use. Can get it lots of places, including online.

This is from a night I hammock hung in my backyard last winter to test gear. It comes with a suction cup to attach to a window, but that pops out and you can attach it to your shoulder strap with a cord if you wish.

Suunto core watch is accurate if not on your body...not cheap but a great altimeter also...http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/04/2067f47834b5ee2299648ccdb88dbc0b.jpg

That looks perfect, Rain Man, thanks. For anyone else wanting one, I found that at Walmart.com for $9.33 + $6 shipping (it wasn't available in any store near me). http://www.walmart.com/ip/Accurite-Thermometer-with-Suction-Cup/16888909. I don't know why I never saw that before, because I've looked at Walmart.com, among other sites, for the same thing before and never found anything like it.

I have one of the Accurites.

But...If you are paying shipping on such a small order I would check out the one at Campmor. I plan to order one next time I have more to order.

I haven't ordered it yet, so I may go for that Campmor one if I have other stuff to bundle with it. I still need several odds and ends for the AT, so I was planning on waiting until I had a decent amount of stuff to get before I ordered any of it. Thanks for the tip.

I tried two of those from Campmor. Both failed. Cheap, low quality. In my experience anyway. I would not try another one. "Fool me once, shame on you; fool my twice, shame on me."

@Rain Man, again nice top. Smallish, seems well made. Used this last night. 34*F. Nice to know how my setup fairs against different temps.

Just remember it's not waterproof, especially in case of rain. Glad you liked it!

A hint, the 24-hour memory starts when you put the battery in, so by choosing when you do that, you can start the memory cycle when you want, to capture the hottest and coldest part of the day, and also to save it long enough for you to see it before it recycles.

Yep. That suction cup pops right out, so you can use a cord to attach to your shoulder strap, etc.

+1 Saltysack. Thermometers are on my Suunto Core and Casio Pathfinder altimeter compass watches along with a host of other useful weather predicting data. At the other end of the financial spectrum are the cheapy SMALL thermometers found in dollar stores sometimes in the same area as you find the cheapy very basic compasses that can be attached to a backpack shoulder strap, jacket zipper, etc stored in a very out of the way but easy to reach location.

I have a Suunto, but the OP asked for something that records highs and lows. Do the Suunto and Casio do that? If so, I will have gratefully learned something. :)

As an aspiring meterologists and stargazer I simply wake up each hr each night and take temp readings and review a constellation. I have it timed to coincide with my hourly over active bladder. :)

What about the add-on for Garmin GPS units? You are supposed to get a temp recorded while the GPS is on.

i have the 4000 NV .. Incredible battery life, waterproof, you can how often it reads and stores the temperature.. Every 20, 30 minutes, etc. Wind gauge computs wind chill, tells wind speed, .. Dew point, heat index, tons of data, battery life is months long, .. When testing extremes on gear, I love having this much data at hand ... It's not cheap though..
