I appreciate the expression of thanks, but I don't think there is any such thing as a "past veteran." One is either a veteran or not. Once a veteran, always a veteran.

Maybe the finer points of the English language are not all that important here. And as DY is a veteran himself the clear meaning of his post was as a thanks to all of those that have served (past), those currently serving (present) and those who will serve (future).

Spent Veterans Day in Yorktown, Va today. Very uplifting ceremony at the town hall. I highly recommend a visit to this area during Veterans Day. Thanks to all who serve our country....

The greatest gift to a veteran...when family and friends recognize your service and give you a simple thank you. Makes one feel very special. :)
