Nice reading about a town trying to become more hiker friendly.

Wind Gap is a great town and a great place to stop and get resupplied, some of the other towns that suppose to be hiker friendly could learn a lot from wind gap.

I'm surprised the article makes no mention of the Gateway Motel, which is just a tenth of a mile from the trail and already used by a number of AT hikers.

They were removed from the Companion by the field editor so I'm pretty sure they closed, or they felt it wasn't worth it.

Here are a couple reveiews

The Bed was WET!!!!! The room had trash everywhere, in the drawers, in the cabinets, in the desk, under the sink. First to ReviewThe gateway motel advertises as a hiker friendly establishment but don't let the decrepit building deceive you...actually it's worse than it looks. The owner sold us overpriced drinks after giving us disdainful looks. In our trail guide it says that filling water bottles at the outside spigot is ok but the woman quickly expressed otherwise. After trying to converse as she was yelling we ended up pouring the water out to appease her then were told to immediately get off her property or she would call the cops and prosecute us for trespassing and theft. This all of course happened after hiking 12 miles without water on an 86 degree day. I would highly recommend that travelers and hikers choose another place to stay or support, because this establishment is unclean, unfriendly and completely undesirable.

For sure...I have heard many complaints regarding the Gateway Motel.

On the other hand, the Beer Stein has a great reputation. The owner allows camping and in the AM hikers can use his kitchen to prepare breakfast !!!

The Gateway Motel was "Okay" when I stayed last year. It is a lower class Patel Motel and was typical of the genre.

On the plus side, I found a pound of Hamburger Patties in the freezer which I ate in a protein gorging feast. That wouldn't happen in a Holiday Inn.

Stayed there in 2010. Not that bad. We called from the parking lot trying to decide if we wanted to stay there or go into town to the other hotel. I asked them if they had internet and they said yes, so that was the deciding factor. Once we got there we found out they did not have internet. We did not even have a working phone in our room. On the plus side, Dave the owner took us into town and then came back a couple hours later and picked us up.
