So if you use a poncho as a tarp how do you keep the head hole from not leaking in the rain?
goose neck tie off. twirl it around, bend it over, then put the hood hole bungee cord around the middle of the bundle and tighten.

Wow - honest who cares if it leaks? its a survival back up that has dual capabilities. Just like a Gatewood cape. Its about snugging it to the ground breaking wind chill and keeping you somewhat dry... best piece of kit. Short of a female partner next to you... oh wait....did I just post that? Uhhhhh..... OK

Do you use helium in the balloon? Where do you find a backpacking size tank?
maybe the balloon could be used to store methane instead!

Use a lady's hair scrunchie instead of a rubber band. Much stronger and less likely to break.

Use a guy line and pull out the center to provide more headroom.
If you are planning to use a poncho tarp for both rain gear and shelter, practice first in the rain. It's doable, but you're going to get wet.

Couple a mountain house "chili Mac" meals for methane generation.

Naw, to much liability involved, some smack Azz would just blow he self up.
disclaimer: never cook in your tent without proper and full ventilation.

on top of teaching you that you will get a bit wet when setting up a poncho tarp, it will help drive home that if it is rainy you will eventually be wet and that is totally okay.
