Do any of you use a map holder that attaches to your belt? I am a slow hiker and like to keep track of my progress. Where would I find one? Cannot seem to locate one online. Thanks

Jandd has one (made for bicycles) that has Velcro strips that you might be able to modify.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but if so, look at bicycle touring map cases.

You can fold the map and keep it in a sealable plastic bag. You can attach that to your belt or keep it in an easily reached pocket or pouch until you want it. Would something like that work?

the military uses them a lot - many styles and sizes... this is simple and has loops to roll up and attach to a belt if you like.

I prefer mine in my cargo pocket, but that's just habit.

I've done the big mapcase thing in the past. Also now prefer a gallon ziplock in the cargo pocket.

Most AT hikers use a 1 gallon sized Ziploc freezer bag- AWOL's sheets fit in there nicely and fold over well.

I use full waterproof pouches for canoe trips where it's nice to have the map out and weight isn't a big concern. There are many available but I have used something like this- http://www.amazon.com/Sea-Summit-Guide-Waterproof-7-75-Inch/dp/B006073JJG

I just carry what I need each day in a regular size ziplock, pocket profile on one side and the days guide book page on the other side. I keep it in my pants pocket. Balance of pages and maps are in larger ziplock in my pack.

I got mine at walmart. It didn't attach to my belt but on my chest strap. The AWOL guide fit in nicely. I could flip it up to look at my progress as I was walking. Check my journal on Trailjournals.com/racewalker. I have some pictures of me with the map holder Racewalker

Thank you to all the input. Looks like you all use a gallon Ziploc bag. I checked the links and like the military sites. Will try to check them out.

If you like the military style pouches, look for a fold-down admin panel. Many will have a clear vinyl pocket for your map, plus pockets for pens, knife, etc. If it has PALS loops, on the back, a Malice clip will allow you to attach it to the sternum strap on your pack. If you are interested in making your own custom admin panel, check out the DIY Tactical forums. Lots of how-to's and pics of panels that others have made.
