Can anyone give me a rough overview of what the trail is like in each separate state?

This may fit better under the straight forward section, my apologies if so

The easy states are in the middle. The hard states are at the beginning and end. That should cover it.

Here is a summary of the terrain for each state as presented on the ATC's website:

I prefer the term "less difficult". Nothing is easy, especially with the heat. They just need to know the New Hampshire and Maine sections are 7-10 times more difficult than the southern Appalachians

Maryland is the only state where I've hiked the entire AT (well also WV I suppose) and it really is quite easy.

I'll tell you how the trail is in every state, there are mountains, there are rocks, there is dirt, there fields of clover, there are way too many trees, there are streams-creeks-rivers-ponds and lakes, there are highways and by ways, there are houses, there are people, dogs, cats, deer, bear, turkeys, buzzards, porcupine-watch your boots in Pennsylvania, and then there are grouse!
