I had a similar experience canoeing, but on liquid water of course. The surface of the lake was so calm and the water was so clear, it was as if the water was invisible. The water was about 50 feet deep so it is was like you were floating 50 feet above the ground.

I experienced a similar situation in Maine on a cove on Sebago Lake 25 years ago. The area got a lot of recreational use and boat launches. We were walking well off shore and could look down and see lost equipment, plenty of empties and in few spots full six packs. The ice was well over 4" thick and totally clear with just a couple of air bubbles . My friends dog was totally freaked out. He would run out and hang around with us, then look down and then would start barking and run back to the shore.

I have had that happen, while in a canoe. It was eerie.

Maybe that is how Lake Erie got the name?

I have never seen ice so clear. It is difficult to "believe my eyes" looking at that ice.

Thats one of the few surfaces that really weird me out, fresh ice, 4" to 6" thick, plenty safe enough to walk on, but absent any bubbles, flaws, or things like leaves that provide depth perception of the ice itself. Everytime there is a crack heard in the ice you think you are going in. Very creepy.
