I figure since it's Winter Solstice we could add pics of our shelters in the snow, whether tents or hammocks or tarps or bivy sacks etc. No 44 foot long RVs please!

They could be on the Appalachian Trail or the CDT or PCT or BMT or MST or wherever else, just gotta have some snow in the pic. Maybe describe where you are and what the conditions were like. Here's a pic---

My old Mt Hardwear Muir Trail tent on Bob Mt in some cold temps. 2003. This was a 9 day trip and I spent 4 of them right here on the mountain in the storm.

This is on the BMT through the Citico Wilderness. I honestly believe it got warmer (inside the tent) as the inches began to pile up overnight. Morning was a beautiful winter wonderland - which is why I do the bulk of my hiking during the winter.

Sorry, had to post your pic bigger because it looks neato. I remember this Halloween when it rained all night and then got cold and stopped. Wow, no more rain hitting the tent. Thing is, the rain turned to snow and I couldn't hear the pitter-patter of the stuff and by morning everything was covered. News to me.

And Alpine Jack---Your pic reminds me of meeting my backpacking buddy Hootyhoo up on Bob Mt in January 2010 and he was camped I think in maybe the same place you are camping?? It's look similar and even the tent looks similar. This is his tent but my dog.

Cool pics. The first one is neat with the snow actually falling. The NF looks like their Mountain tent, robust 4 season thing.

too funny, I got up early and was ready for a quick getaway that morning. As my pack sits there and gets snowed on I think to myself.....I should be sleepin' right now.

Snow is a great insulator, you ever fall butt first into a snow bank and just sit there for a bit, kinda warm, cradling...and warm.

There's that, and then there's the falling and the consequent unwillingness to get back up because it's a Hell Slog and so you seriously consider curling up in a ball in the snow by a tree and going to sleep, permanently. It's a hard nut to crack. Gotta get up and drat it keep moving.

Crazy way to go.

When I was in college, drunk student came out of bar and crawled under someones car, was going to grab their leg when they came out to scare them. Proceeded to pass out. Was dragged a distance under car by unknowing driver. Lost one arm, and part of face.. Doenst have to be winter for alcohol to cause problems.

Yes indeed! We all tented the next night at William Brien. We were just strolling about, except that a couple of the stronger hikers went and did a big loop to the south. It was snowy there too, but I don't think anyone thought to take a picture. It was a mite chilly: the snivel meter said 18 °F inside my tent the next morning. The way body heat warms a tent, it must have been quite a bit colder outside. The Boy Scouts who were using the shelter decamped in the middle of the night.

Did they really? I just thought they got up, earlier than we did and hiked on!

Funny thing about that trip is that I brought my zero degree bag that was actually too warm, but I stupidly only packed my beat up zrest foam pad that didn't have nearly enough insulation. I slept on my side and had to keep switching sides throughout the night because whatever side was against the pad was freezing and the side that was on top kept sweating!

I wonder if Lou's going to post a photo of his "hooch" shelter.

Here's one from one of my Nepal trips back in the 90's.
This one is from 17,500' Dhampus pass which is just north of Dhaligiri.
I stayed here again in 2004 the night before I summited 20,000' Dhampus peak.29239

That looks like a North Face frog-style tent and I've seen a view over the years. Very cool pic of some real mountains.

Speaking of boy scouts reminds me of this pic though they weren't scouts and spent a frigid night above 5,000 feet on a mountain in NC. I woke up the next day at 8am and they were gone! Bailed fast.

I remember they saying, "Good God! It's alot colder than we thought it would be!" Yes. The wild thing is they are camping in a Eureka Timberline tent under a leaning dead tree and oops but this tree falls a couple years later right where their tent is.

I'm jealous, I've scoured all my Florida Trail hiking photos, and can't come up with any snow pics. I do have some pics of snow-white beach sand, but doubt that would fool you guys. ;)

This is a great pic showing what winter camping is all about---overcast skies, snow everywhere and maybe even spindrift, a coated tent requiring some effort to take down and stuff (in a bag probably a little bit too small for an ice-encrusted tent), and the all-important guylines pegged for in-camp tent security. "Better to peg out and not need them than to need them and not be pegged out". This is a sentence I repeat every night before going to sleep.

In such warm conditions or in places without any chance of snow I do the following technique and it really helps:

Open up refrigerator freezer at home and stick head inside. Try to slam freezer door shut 3 times. Keep head inside. Repeat at intervals.

This pic reminds me of certain snow conditions when the air humidity is high and the temps cold and my tent condensation is TERRIBLE.

Those are great pics. Denali always reminds me of the book Minus 148 Degrees by Art Davidson. His group got caught in a winter ascent hellstorm and spent many weeks suffering and 3 or 4 terrible days holed up in an ice cave with 3 guys near Archdeacon Tower. 100mph winds, hence the -148F number.

OTOH, their survival rate for their winter 8000M ascents is running about 50%....

I suppose most Polish climbers are animals but one comes to mind as being particularly tough. I heard him mentioned in passing once and I think it was Jerzy Kukuczka. Thanks for the Freedom Climbers link as it's something more to copy and read on my next trip.

I've taken out dozens of mountaineering books on my winter trips---Wickwire, Messner, Viesturs, Bonington, Touch the Void, Karkauer, Bonatti, Herzog, Boukreev, Weathers etc etc.

Despite what hell they go thru, I love reading about alpine cold snowy mishaps and deadly or near-death epics while I'm sitting in a tent at 0F in a blizzard in the mountains of NC and TN. No matter how tough I have it, it will NEVER BE AS TOUGH as what they are going thru or have gone thru.

Good eye Tipi. It is a light wedge 3. Nice space for 2 people in the winter.

I gave my old Light Wedge to a newbie just starting out, a sort of charity case. The tent originally had Mt Hardwear 8.5-9mm poles with the crappy (I think) Atlas pole system and a pole snapped for no reason on a trip in August 2005 (see pic) and field repaired with sticks since I had no repair sleeve.

I replaced the 2 long wedge poles with 11mm dome tent poles, cut to size with a hacksaw and new shock cord ETC and it worked better than ever before.

2925829259 Well if we're down to posting shelter pics, here's Jerry's Cabin shelter on 1-21-10. With a fire going inside it was a toasty 38* inside. In the late 70s this had the dishonor of being called the most trashed shelter on the AT. The AT was on Duke Power lands and the USFS could not close the trail/road which it is on. Nothing like taking a break here while rednecks on dirt bike did wheelies as they went by. The trail was finally closed to motorized traffic in the late 80s and you can hardly tell it was a well used road. Now it gets trashed by hikers but I make monthly trips to help keep it a bit cleaner. That's how I got my trail name. Also the mice population is pretty much gone too. :sun

It's a freestanding, 3 person, Sierra Designs tent.
It was a beautiful morning to wake up to in the woods.

This is the beginning of a considerable storm; as the snow accumulated we decided to pack up and head back to Yosemite valley. It was late October. My tent is the yellow Kelty. It's not pitched very well, but it was a useful tent. My buddy rigged up an extra tarp over his tent.

Throwing a tarp up on the open side of a shelter is a common ploy used in the winter.

Conditions change to cold pretty fast in the Sierras. It reminds me of Solo Girl's PCT hike when her tarp failed her in a sudden June sleet storm---See---

Camping off of Holmes Bay in Cutler, ME the weekend after this past Thanksgiving. It's an old Eureka Alpine Meadows tent. Heavy, but solid and roomy.

Y'all crazy! That looks cold! A little scared of the Roans this spring! Be prepared, on 5-9-10 temp was 36* at Overmountain shelter. Winds were blowing in gusts that pushed me around a bit on the balds just past the shelter. Wearing every thing I had and my face was so cold it hurt. Two days before I was laying in shorts soaking up some sun with 66* on the fields near the old hotel site on Roan Mtn.

Pine Grove Furnace 11/29/14. I believe it got down to about 15*F that night. There are 8 tents/tarp tents/tarp and a hammock in this picture.

Looks to be a great campsite and reminds me of one in Pisgah NF near Huntfish Falls.

I was not on Roan when you got your May cold snap but on April 29 about a week before I was in a 5,000 foot gap in the Nantahalas and got a surprise snow---
