I received this email today from the ATC, thought I would share:

It is with tremendous excitement and great relief that I can share some fantastic news.

New York's Gaming Facility Location Board has rejected the Sterling Forest Resort (http://appalachiantrail.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=64f18e8ab0289e37511640181&id=870bfd532c&e=17c6b6d613) casino development near Tuxedo due, in part, to its detrimental environmental impacts.

Because the proposed location is surrounded by Sterling Forest State Park and was very close to and within clear sight of the Appalachian Trail, we strongly support this recommendation to the New York Gaming Commission.

As I reflect back on the last few months, I am extraordinarily proud of ATC and the many other organizations who came together in a collective voice to say "No" to this proposal. Specifically, I would like to thank the hard working and dedicated team at the NY/NJ Trail Conference whose work was instrumental in defeating this proposed development.

Whether you donated money, attended meetings, made phone calls, wrote letters, spread the word through social media or did anything else to support our efforts I wish to say simply, thank you.

Because of our collective hard work, no casino will be built near Sterling Forest State Park.

Sincerely,

Ron Tipton

Executive Director/CEO

Glad someone had the whole email. Mine wouldn't fully open so only received part of the news.

As Carlin would say holy jumpin fkin shartballs. In a state like NY no less. There is still hope. I specifically would like to know what politicians played in the refusal so I can send them too a sincere letter of thanks.

I don't know Dogwood, the legislature may be busy with more pressing matters.

It was a separate group making the decisions, not any part of the legislature. Not to say that no one political could be involved.

LOL. Construction projects of this magnitude with far reaching consequences don't come to be realized without politics being included. Don't kid yourself. Politicians were listening, considering, and acting, whether openly in public or not.

Thank God. I saw a photo of the proposed Monstrosity and I can only say it doesn't deserve to see the light of day. One more portion of the AT is now safe!

Don't worry, it's just a quick hitch to the Metro-North train system and from there you can have your pick of half bankrupt casinos in Atlantic City.

Well, a quick hitch to Metro North can be had but the multi leg train trip from anywhere on the Metro North line to AC will NOT be as quick. AC will be a few hrs away one way. Even though Amtrak does have service along the Metro North line it doesn't go directly to AC. You'd have to go into Philly first to take the Amtrak to AC. A longer trip than you might assume.

I'd stay up in NY and go to one of the closer NY casinos. And, if you want even greater quicker casino access try the PCT instead. Casinos are located in S. Tahoe prolly less than 10 miles off the PCT.

I'm no fan of casinos. I'ld just as soon watch dollar bills go round and round as I flush them. I'm glad there will not be a casino within eye sight of the trail.
But my personal issue is the vast majority of anti-casino people are fundamentalist Christians. In my not so humble opinion they are the core of all evil.
I just don't want to be on their side of any argument.
