How does one obtain their "starting number" when starting from Springer Mountain?

I plan on skipping the approach trail and starting from the route 42 intersection.

there is no starting number. a lot of hikers don't sign registers at all

I think you'll have to stop at Amicalola Falls State Park to at least sign in. If you're in no hurry (and coming from the south) it's worth the trip. You can check out the falls etc.

even then he may be #47 say but actually 80 started. the kennebec river crossing is the most accurate #

Yeah, of course, probably not even half check it at AFSP.

Never saw the "mailbox". When did the register get moved to the rock?

No number needed, when you finish you will receive a 2000 miler rocker and completion certificate, it's all the same it doesn't matter if you start or finish as number 100 or 4000, people gets to tangled up with starting numbers and signing registers, if you DON'T sign in at AFSP or sign the register on Springer or DON'T go into Harpers Ferry to have your picture taken and sign their register, it will NOT affect your completion status what so ever. IT'S ALL THE SAME, remember to HYOH.

I never would have found it if here hadn't been someone else up there to show me where it was.
