I am planning on doing a thru hike in the next few years, and I have already been thinking about start dates. I am thinking that I would start late February, like the 26th or 27th, because I want to start with quite a few people, but not as many as those that start in March. Have any of you started your hikes this early? And what do you think is the best time to start?

In Feb. there are not going to be quite a few people starting their thru. Depending on the weather the day you start in Feb. you may get a few day and overnight hikers. Depending on the weather forecast you may not see large numbers of starters even in early March.

I started Feb. 21 and was the 65th thru-hiker to register at Amicalola Falls State Park. There were about a dozen hikers I continually ran into all he ay to Maine.

Brrr. Could be cold. Take your Microspikes for icy trails.

I started 3/21 & there were a lot of people & a lot of cold weather. But, I was able to get floor space at every shelter I wanted to sleep at except the last one, Birches (it was full).

Good luck in your planning.
