Hey everybody.

This is my first post, and I intend to start a NOBO thru-hike with my Dad in a few months. I'm still planning things, but I created a tool to help me, and thought I'd share it here.

I took the tabled data by mile from the 2014 Thru-Hiker's Companion and arranged it all into a single spreadsheet. I also added a few columns, approximating % Grade, and Naismith's Rule hiking times for each leg, as well as for notes, permit and side-trek spaces. Some of the notes are filled in (where the Forest Service requires bear cannisters, back country permits, etc...), but it's not complete yet. I figure if this was going to be helpful to anyone else for this year, sooner & incomplete would be better than later & finished.

Of course, you'll still need to buy the Companion from the ATC if you want a key to the "Services" legend and other info, but I thought this might be helpful to someone else to start with.

Thanks for the hard work- kind of you to do that!

Wow, that was a lot of work! Impressive. I've tried copying the pdf tables into excel and always ran into more formatting problems than it was worth to me to resolve. This is really great. Thank you for sharing.

I've done something similar. In my version, you can enter a number in the green column where you want to stop for the night and the rest of the columns will be populated with data about the hike (day and cumulative). I'm not sure where the data came from (downloaded it a while ago). I suspect some of it is out of date, but for planning sections hikes, this is useful.

The spreadsheet I did in 2012 (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-66BZUOzlFBaENHejNxbnRrd0k/view?usp=sharing) was just for resupplying. I kept updating it on the trail so I knew which towns to resupply and mail my bounce box (ie. I knew in the next 2-3 weeks which towns I would miss the weekend) as that kept the ETA within a day of reality. It also let me know how much food I needed to get to the next resupply. It gave me a rough idea when I'd finish. It obviously got more accurate as I got further along on the trail since I could better estimate my Miles Per Day average better for each section. Some of the mileage is now off by a few miles due to trail reroutes since 2012.

I eliminated all my personal resupply data, as I plan to start off a bit slower than most (starting earlier, I'm overweight & 39 but my dad's 66 & a triathelete).

The file is an xls: specifically saved it in win 95 version for max compatibility. As far as format issues going from pdf to excel: If you open the pdf with Acrobat (not just the reader), when you highlight a block of table from the pdf, it gives you the option to "copy as table" (at least in newer versions of acrobat). I still had to go page by page, but in the end it seems to be worth it for planning.

Phenomenal spreadsheet! As are the other ones in this post. I'm thinking of uploading it to my Google Drive so I can update it along the way.

I can't open the OP file either.... (Actually the excel file opens but is blank). Not sure why, because I can open all the other files that were posted....BTW Great stuff! Could you (or someone) post the first file again? Perhaps put on google drive? Thanks!

I saved it to Dropbox. Does that help?
