Can anyone give me some info on canoe camping the Sipsey river in Alabama such as GPS coordinates to the take out and put in, or if there are shuttles available. I plan on taking my kids in march, we want to do the 20 mile trip.

Thanks,
Max

people do this? the one time I went to sipsey it was a trickle at best in most places. perhaps during rainy seasons you can canoe it, but I have my doubts based on what I saw.

Done it a bunch of times. Watershed is very sensitive to rain (it rises and falls fast so is difficult to catch – you can’t just pick a weekend, head up there and hope for the best). Below 150 cfs on link below you will be dragging and miserable. Above 500 cfs isn't safe I don't think. Creek is very narrow and I have had to navigate log jams every time I've done it. They are fun but can be dangerous especially with high flow levels. They recently prevented canoe access to borden creek (tributary of sipsey) unless you like carrying a canoe and gear 1.5 miles so your only two options for put in are Thompson Creek (22 mile float) or Sipsey rec area (obo 11 mile float). The upper section is some of the coolest scenery I've ever seen (old growth forests and such - you wont believe you are in Alabama). Take out can either be Sipsey Rec area (if put in at Thompson Creek) or Hwy 33 if you put in at either place I mentioned. Websites with info are below. Again, I wouldn't take it lightly as the log jams can be dangerous.
