My son took this picture on a flight from Salina, KS to Hickory, NC. I can't place exactly where it is (maybe you can?), but I suspect it's northwest of Asheville. The picture was taken to the south. Anyway, I like the picture and hope you do, too.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that's the Black Mountains (Mount Mitchell being the high point), Burnsville, NC at the foot, and US 19W headed towards Erwin, TN tracing back towards the camera.

Whoops, that would more likely be Burnsville with 19W running back and forth across the photo, and the Nolichucky River + CSX tracks running towards the camera.

AOI think you are right about it being the Black Mountain ridge that the crest trail runs across. That mountain range is very prominent and stands out even among other large mountains around it. If it isn't I don't know what else it could be. Too small in area to be the Smokies.

.........the Beauty Spot and nearby Pleasant Garden, along the Unaka Mountain Road several hundred feet in elevation above the Beauty Spot. That large white building in Burnsville looks very familiar inasmuch as I've seen the Blacks and Burnsville from the Beauty Spot and Pleasant Garden several times in recent years.
