It seems walking around my house for an hour wearing my 4 day supply 31 lb backpack has awakened some muscles I haven't heard from in a while.

There is work to be done before April besides getting a few new pieces of gear...

Reduce it to 20 lbs and see how you feel.

I know how you feel. I've laid off hiking since October to get over plantar fasciitis in one foot. Just did a training hike this week, and like you said, awakened some soreness i had not felt in a while. But at least we have some perfect hiking weather for a while in NW Florida. Have fun getting ready for the trail!

You're on the right track, keep walking with the pack for a couple hours each day. Walk around a local park, walk around the neighborhood, just keep at it.

Bob ,you need to find some hills to climb. Its the climbs that really put those muscles to work as well as your lungs. Happy hiking!

Thanks for the bit of feedback. I've been walking around for a few weeks now on and off with a lighter pack, (15lb max), but that weight didn't have the same effect as the 30lb did. I wish I could get to some hills here, but I think only one worth wild would be one of the intercostal bridges here on the east coast.

After a few days you'll forget you even have it on. It will help if you don't take it off much during the day while you are hiking. I take mine off at lunch time and dinner time and when I'm done hiking for the day...the rest of the time I keep it on even if I'm taking a break. If you take it off at every break your body will revolt when you put it back on.

It will go away after a week on the trail. I carry an 80 liter and a 30 liter on my chest for work it can be miserable at the beginning of the week.

Overthinking this thing. Just go to springer and start walking.

As it were, and or me, it was less about the weight of a pack and conditioning the legs and more about conditioning the shoulders and hips the take the lashing. Couple weeks of walking nights around the block and they are good to go...done this everytime before a trip...again, works for me.

To give your legs the full AT experience, go to the mall and start walking up the down escalator with your pack on. After an hour or so, (assuming security hasn't stopped you yet), turn around and walk down the up escalator for an hour. Stop for 10 minutes and eat a snack, then repeat 2 or 3 times.
