I have tried several types, but the finger lining always pulls out. Suggestions? has anyone tried wool mittens?

I use fleece gloves with an outer mitten and find the combination works well. For mild winter conditions I use a set similar to the ones in the link below and find they work well for hiking with my poles.

I use wool mittens under a shell all the time. The military mitten liners have a trigger finger that is handy for many things around camp besides shooting people.

Zpack makes some cuben mitten shells with fleece liners. Mountain Laurel Designs makes some mitten shells out of Precip. You can used fleece gloves or mittens with them.

I like windblock fleece gloves in the winter, and a separate set of rain mitts over them if it's raining or whatever.

My go-to gloves for MILD temps are a pair of off-the-rack store brand cycling gloves. Full fingered, long cuff, water resistant, very wind-resistant, and a fabric patch on the inside of the thumb-index finger joint for wiping a runny nose. When worn on an early-morning pre-dawn exercise walk, they're good down to the low- to mid-20s.

finger lining gloves never worked for me, i use black diamond pilot glove (cheap leather work glove like mechanics glove for cheap alternative), go light down mit. fleece, or wool mit i think is better but have not tried. most fleece or wool mits don't have a keeper strap to put around your arm a nice feature with the down mits for taking pictures and such. and mountain laurel designs rain mit. for cod wet weather. i like having options in layering my hands as i do with the rest of my clothing

I have WindStopper OR Gripper Gloves, full finger and no fingertips but the fleece collects lint and is too bulky.

I prefer a glove inside a wind and waterproof mitten, the mittens having a cord around and through the sleeves like that for children.

I still have my Black Diamond mountaineering gloves, if I need my ice axe.

Black Stallion Fuzzy Hands, super warm and cheap. Don't know how they would work if wet though

I like fleece or silk glove liner, bison wool mittens with Zpack over mitts.
Mix and match as required.

Have always wanted to try down mittens.

I recently ran into the same problem, but I now use small cheap black gloves as liners. Problem solved.

We used possum fur gloves (not waterproof) covered with the event rain mittens for wind/rain protection and it worked well on our 2014 SOBO thru.
