I've read where people register at the start (A. Falls)and elsewhere is this necessary? Do you really need a number assigned to you?

It's a good idea to register, that way the powers that be know you're on the trail. If you get lost it's that much to know to look for you.
No need to sign a register or No need for a number that will not have any affect on your completion status. the only people that needs to know your out their is your family it's no body else's business. HYOH
