Has anyone here used world nomads travel insurance while on a long distance hike, if you have how would you rate it?

They are geared for international travel but domestic travel health insurance is possible. A 6 month policy is $335. They do have a rule for domestic travel that it only covers you if you're more than 100 miles from 'your' home.

You should call or write them with any questions. I used them for a 1 month policy when I was traveling overseas. Luckily I didn't have to use the policy. Hiking is one of the covered activities for USA residents under their standard plan.

Take home message from that post is that if you're close to home (100 miles) you may not be covered in an accident.

I bought a policy for my thru-hike last year. When I busted up my knee on Blood Mountain in Georgia and ended up in the hospital, neither hospital or doctors office (emergency clinic) had ever heard of them and had no idea how to bill them even though I had all the info with policy numbers and provider contact info. Everything came out of pocket and they never reimbursed anything. I would never use them again nor would I recommend them in good conscience. It was a complete waste of money and I never heard from them when I needed them. Definitely avoid.

I have no idea what your talking about! I saw a hiker from last year mention that she was going to use them. I was just looking for a little direction. Please explain what your referring too as I havent a clue.

If you look at the website, and the small print this insurance is backed by legit companies. Like any other insurance, the small print is what decides if and when they reimburse. I would suggest getting a copy of the small print, seeing if you are willing to abide with the restrictions and then deciding rather than just asking random other folks. Most travel insurance has some pretty intense small print as otherwise it would be unaffordable. Most require preauthorization prior to care and to most folks used to walking into a clinic with an insurance card and worrying about the details later they would be unhappy with the company as their care most likely will not be covered. At best these short term plans usually are cover catastrophic costs which may make them valuable to some but rarely will routine injuries get covered to the extent that some expect.
