Rei Flash 50 L, wt- 2lb 3oz 1 large exterior mesh pocket, 2 nice size hip belt pockets

Bunch of packs (Zpacks, ULA Circuit, Osprey, Golite, etc). The one that gets the most use in the ULA Circuit. I've pared down my gear so that it fits nicely into the Circuit. Mesh shove-it pocket, hip belt pockets, clean & simple design. I haven't tried the Circuit in bear canister country. As I understand it, a canister doesn't fit horizontally in the Circuit. I may revert back to the Osprey for that.

REI Flash 62
REI Flash 45

Gregory Z Pack
Mountainsmith (unknown model, ~30L, heavy)

The ZPacks ArcBlasts are my favorite by far. The 60L will be used on my upcoming thru this year- the 52L ended up being too small, so I ordered the larger one.

The Flash 62 I use mainly for colder weather short hikes where I have bulky gear.

Zpacks ArcBlast 52L, 1 ib
Osprey Kestrel 48L, 3.5lbs

The size of both is perfect for three season backpacking. I love the organization and features of the Kestrel but the weight of the ArcBlast makes it my "go to" pack.

I have an older EMS mountaineering pack, 30L that I use for day hikes.

A CAVALCADE OF PACKS

http://tipiwalter.smugmug.com/Backpacking2010/Coy-Williams-and-the-25th/i-nd7khdV/0/M/TRIP%20114%20328-M.jpg
One of my first big load haulers was a North Face Backmagic pack which I got in 1980 and used seriously nonstop until 2002---and thousands of bag nights. External frame and mighty.

http://tipiwalter.smugmug.com/Backpacking2005/Nine-Days-With-Johnny-Be-Trip/i-vvJMDvt/0/M/45-25%20%20jb%20crossing%20the%20slickrock%20going%20 upstream-M.jpg
I retired my North Face and went with a Kelty Ultra Tioga (not Super Tioga but ULTRA) but with more than 70 lbs it would sag and kill my hips so I gave it to my backpacking buddy Johnny B.

http://tipiwalter.smugmug.com/Backpacking2005/Snow-On-The-South-Fork-Trip-44/i-zNCWqh5/0/M/44-1%20%20south%20fork-M.jpg
The I got 40% off this Dana Designs Terraplane LTW and it was my load hauler for several years and kept me out in the woods for weeks at a time, but over 75 lbs the thing would sag. It's still an excellent pack.

http://tipiwalter.smugmug.com/Backpack-2014-Trips-152/21-Days-in-the-Snow/i-BZvmbZt/0/M/TRIP%20153%20222-M.jpg
Dana Designs went out of business years ago but the owner Dana Gleason started up his own pack company called Mystery Ranch and so I got a G7000 pack which he designed to haul 80 lbs with comfort and now it's all I ever use and hauls everything in remarkable comfort. My longest trip with this pack w/o resupply was a winter trip of 24 days.

My only pack is a ULA Circuit, used for all trips including overnights and multi week hikes. I'd like to add an Ohm 2.0 for long east coast hikes (such as my future AT thru hike). And I wouldn't mind a CDT for very short summer weekend hikes locally and for a possible future European hut-to-hut trip in the Alps or the Camino. But for now, I'm sticking with just one pack the Circuit.

In the late '80s/early '90s I had a Kelty external frame. I gave it to goodwill when I moved to the east coast in 2002. I regret having given it away. I was away from backpacking for a very long time.

Glad to hear, I have read the sizes run small. I have a 19" torso and am thinking the large over the medium. I'm excited to see what the flash 45 is like. At less than $100 for a supposedly well made lightweight pack, it's hard not to like already. I love high value gear.

Headin to REI this week to try one on. If it fits I'm going to buy it and use it all this year. If I still like it, no reason no to take it on my thru.

This pack would fit well in my budget, ultralight lifestyle.

Thanks again

My first pack was a 2nd generation osprey aether 85, went over 400 miles of backpacking with that.
When I wanted to go lighter I first tried a ula catalyst, just that for another several hundred but I never found it comfortable and got rid of it.
Then I got an aether 70 in the xl size which fit very well but still so heavy. Then I got a granite gear crown. Did a couple hundred miles in both.
The crown was comfortable but it had a floppy framesheet which required careful pack and when not reasonably full could be a pain. I also tried a elemental horizon aquilo which was about the same weight as the crown but had a rigid frame.
Finally I got a unaweep backpack from seekoutside. Only a little over 3 pounds and the most comfortable out of all of them. I got rid of all my other packs and bought a second.

I would say that in the summer my base weight is around 13 to 15 pounds, in winter up to 20 to 21 pounds. I just like big packs and don't understand the appeal of stuffing everything into the smallest possible space. I am not nor ever will be an extreme ultralighter with a BW under 10 pounds, I have no interest. In the summer I just put my quilt a really big stuff sack, put my crocs inside the pack and make use the the packs compression. The unaweep in particular has such excellent compression that even if it is only 1/2 full or loosely packed it doesn't matter. Just because you have a larger pack that can carry a heavy load doesn't mean you have to fill it or carry a heavy load it in. The unaweep only weighs a little over 3 pounds. Sure I could use a smaller 2 pound pack but I don't see the point, others probably dissagree.

Funny you bring up the unaweep. It's a pretty much perfect ultralight pack for when you need to do extra large food or water hauls (the kind you don't usually see anyone attempt on the AT). All the weight of that pack is functional.

And just because your pack starts out at 60lbs, doesn't necessarily mean you're not ultralight. It could mean you have 50lbs of food and water! :P

Klymit Motion 60 - 60L total and 2.6 lb. Air frame. I just picked this one up. Very comfortable and roomy. Handles 55 lb loads no problem. Well made but only time will tell just how well made.
Kelty Blazer hip bag (not the silly convertible jacket thingy) - best dang hip bag ever made. It has thousands of miles on it. Nearly indestructible Spectra. I have an Osprey Volt 60 and an Osprey Talon 44 from 2013 (they have a newer model now). I believe the Talon weighs in right at 2 lbs, 8 oz, and it rides on my back much better than the Volt.

I went to Wind River Range last August with the Talon, and it had almost too much room for 6 days and 5 nights.

Don't know how they measure the liters in a backpack, but the Talon holds a hell of a lot more than the Volt, IMO. The Talon is more like a sack, so it's easy to keep stuffing things in.

The Flash 45 is certainly a pack you want to try on. I'm 5'8" with a 18.5" torso. After throwing 25lbs in both packs and wearing them for quite some time. I decided the large was for me. Lots of people agree that then torso lengths run smaller than advertised.

My GF thinks I have a pack collection problem. I think I will point her to this thread to show her what a real pack collection problem looks like.

I have a Paradox Unaweep 4800 from Seek Outside in Cuben Fiber hybrid, which I love. Six Moon Designs Fusion 50 which doesn't really fit me and anything over 20 pounds starts to get uncomfortable. An LLBean Day Trekker 25, which is my goto day hike pack, a Platypus pack which I never really liked, but was on some huge discount at REI, so I bought it. They only thing I like about the pack was the 3 liter big zip bladder it came with. I also have an REI flash 29 that I gave to my kids because I didn't like the way the shoulder straps rode on my shoulders. Oh, and a Targus laptop bag, too. That counts, right?

I started out with a Deuter ACT lite 50L+10L. It was a good pack that had a comfortable suspension but was heavy. After at least 700 miles it only has minor wear and has plenty of life left in it. Now I use a Gossamer Gear Kumo that I love. Mine is the previous version as the one on their site now. It is a large and weighs 16.9 oz with the sitpad. The mesh pocket is quite large and holds most of the stuff I use daily so I don't have to open the main compartment every time I need something.

This is in my limited experience with packs as these are the only 2 I have used, so take it for what it's worth.

Golite VO24 - 20L; 1lb, 6oz - a tight squeeze but works for overnights and 2 night trips with U/L gear (10 lb base) in summer.
Granite Gear Vapor Day - 36L: 2lb, 4oz - If I need to carry a bit more, especially bulkier clothing in shoulder season. Also doubles as my travel pack.
Aarn Peak Aspiration (Bodypack) - 47L+; 4 lbs - Go-to pack for hikes longer than 2 nights. A bit heavy by modern standards but great suspension.
Golite Jam 50 - 50L: 2lbs - One of those bought on closeout/couldn't resist things for $60 but have yet to use it.

My Osprey Viva 50 ... aka 'Big Delores'.

My only complaints are that the the hip belt pouches are set at an awkward angle to be unzipped with one hand, and that the shoulders tend to rub me a little raw, but that could be me needed to readjust. Overall, it's been faithful and I love it.

A very old Kelty external frame pack (don't know the model; I bought it second hand in 1982) and an Osprey Volt 75. Looking to downsize to maybe a Circuit (seems very popular), or MLD Exodus. Anyone with experience with the Exodus?

My packs are:
Ruffwear Approach, Small - on order (okay that's for my dog)
Gregory Wander 50 S/M (52 liter)

The Gregory is a kids pack. With a small torso (17") there didn't seem to be a lot of options locally of packs to try on. I tried the Osprey Viva and really wanted to like it, but the fit was not the best. Tried the Deuter Futura, a little better, but still... By chance, in another store I tried on the Gregory, it fit comfortably. Then I was surprised to learn that it was a youth pack. Just to be sure, I ordered the REI Flash 52 M, and the Gregory Wander 50 S/M (in a different color), both arrived today. I thought the REI was going to be the one, but the Gregory had more adjustments capabilities and came out the winner.

I have the circuit, ran another strap through the back of the pack and fed it though the canister carrying case it can be carried on top

This year I'll be carrying a Kelty Santa Fe 4000. Weighs in at 4.2 pounds! But it's very durable, very water resistant, and most of all it fits me well. I'll shave the weight in other places.

Deuter ACT 28 for the Mrs. Darn thing opens up like a suitcase for easy packing, etc. The Mrs. just loved this as she is so organized. Actually, I like the concept. It looks like it would be much easier to retrieve items from the backpack when you are on the go on the trail. I have the Osprey Atmos 65. I find it a little large for my weekend and week long excursions. I do like the ventilation it provides and the gracious shoulder straps. I do wish it had generous hip pockets! Overall, great pack that I plan to keep until the sucker wears out!

Canabalized Osprey Aether 60. Brain, bladder, and every strap and attachment that was extra cut off. Love the feel. Wish it was lighter. Some day I will upgrade. Handles 10 day walks fine.
