I've been comparing them side-by-side, and yes, there are lots of updated details. The 2015 guide looks better than ever! :)

The trail has been rerouted in a few places, so the mileages are off a bit from the 2014 guide, but the mountains are still where the good Lord put them. The trail is now 2189.2 miles long.

I bought the 2014 when it went on sale last fall. Sharpen your pencil, go to the updates page on his web site, and pencil-in the changes. Then go to the ATC's trail updates page, and do the same. Nothin' better to do on a winter's day, eh? That book sits next to my chair all winter so I can scribble notes in it.

One change from 2014 to 2015 is the inclusion of a great new hostel in Georgia only 1/2 mile off the trail at Dicks Creek Gap (northbound mile 69.7). The Top of Georgia Hostel and Hiking Center. www.TopOfGeorgiaHostel.com

Due to a change in paper and the binding, I'm under the impression that the 2015 AT Guide is 3 oz heavier than in previous years. Is that true? If so, it would make it heavier than the Companion. :D

No one who carries the whole book is going to quibble over a few ounces.

Perhaps not but until now it was one of the benefits or arguments used when comparing the two books.

Uh, huh. And I thought you asked the question purely out of intellectual curiosity...

The paper is a better weight/coating... It will hold up better.

I know I had problems with the ink wearing off or getting smudged from folding it too many times/dampness on it in the past.

This is a much better product!

I don't think it's the binding. The difference in weight between the bound and unbounded version is minimal.

I am curious if the 2014 version weighed less though, 3 oz is quite a lot. The new one is like 11 and I do seem to remember thinking it should be like 8 when I got it, perhaps this explains my confusion.

the trail just keeps getting tougher and tougher....miles are added, guidebooks are 3 ounces heavier. It's insanity, but people keep showing up anyways. I am thankful that it was a lot easier "back in the day".:)

Tougher paper is an improvement. 3 ounces over 2000+ miles is pretty much nothing since few people carry the entire book. The one criticism I have of the 2014 version is that a few pages did disintegrate near the edges due to dampness. But I didn't protect the pages very well so this wasn't really the fault of the guidebook.

And who owns this great new establishment? hehe I will come visit if you will chase off the snow!

Updated book well worth the money. One quicker food or water stop is worth 15 bucks.

My gal used a 2013 NOBO guide for the last half of our 2014 SOBO, and lived to tell the tale.

We'd rip out 3 or 4 days at a time and keep them in a ziploc for easy, waterproof viewing. No need for tougher paper.
