Well, I didn't win the $500+ million last night. But if I did, I'd have been on here offering to buy and/or build a few hostels and outfitters out along the AT. Probably give a good chunk to the AT Conservancy and then try to donate some to help build better shelters along the whole AT, also.
Oh the daydreaming......

hmmm.
Guess if I were to have won the Powerball I would commission that all the shelters be removed,

My father was talking to me about this other day. He's not even a hiker. But he is planning on moving to a plot of land in Maine soon. He said if he won, he would buy a large chunk of land (large) and build a sweet shelter on his property for thru-hikers. He loves the stories I tell him from my hiking experiences.

He was telling me how he would go out every few days in his shelter and cook up steaks for people lol.. with coolers of soda and beer.

My dad is too old to adventure travel, and really does enjoy the simple life. If he won, he'd have everything he needed in a small house in Maine. On a large plot of land lol. But...it would only take him a year to become a well known trail angel. He'd spend his time enjoying the company of thru-hikers, whilst giving them an experience on the AT they'll never forget.

I didn't win either, forgot to play IIRC too.
Guess I'll have to start a go-fund me now, but I think the lotto odds are better. :D

Why?

For 2 bucks you can dream for a few days what it would be like. Who cares that the odds are 1:175,000,000?

And the pot was $560MM so it was a good $2 wager.

Indeed. For those who dont know whenever the payout is greater than the wager times the odds of winning its a good bet.

Problem is when 4 people win the split is only $140MM. :p:D

To make this trail related, rather than tearing down all the shelters I'd fix the ones in need of repair and harden the camping area near them.

Provide trail maintainers a stipend.

And $140 million is the value if paid out over the 20 or so years... but "you'll" take the cash payout and get the $70 million, and then the government will knock on your door and take their half and in the end you got $35 million of the half billion pot.

Still $35 million is a lot of money.

(And there is something inherently wrong with the government taking a tax cut out of the winnings of a government sponsored lottery)
