I typically hike in a Smartwool zip neck microweight 150 top and REI convertible pants. Once I'm moving, this setup is comfortable for me well down into the 40s. If it is windy or in the 30s, I typically put on my OR Helium II jacket, which is a rain jacket but something I use more as a windshirt. However, I have found that when temps are below freezing, especially when windy, this combination isn't enough and I need something more.
For a recent trip hiking with temperatures in the high teens to mid 20s, I supplemented the two layers with a mid layer which is an REI fleece vest which I've had for years (I don't know the model name or specs other than that it weighs 11 ounces). In addition, I put on my Smartwool long bottom layer (which I normally use just for sleeping) Does this combination seem right for colder hiking weather or would I be better off going with a heavier wool base layer and sticking with a two layer combination for upper body?
