View Full Version : Which DWR treatment for down vest

I have a down vest that came with no DWR treatment on the shell or the down. I am not sure which of the following would be better:
1) Nikwax TX Direct - I would spray it on the shell
2) Nikwax Down Proof - I would soak in the bathtub
3) Or Both 1) and 2)

Which would you recommend and why?

Personally, I wouldn't bother with either, because I've not had moisture problems with down clothing as occasionally occurs with a sleeping bag, and I'm not going to be wearing a down vest or jacket as an outer layer if it's likely to get wet. On the other hand, if these things are concerns for you, why not do both? DWR on the shell is going to be your vest's defense against precipitation, while the Down Proof would hopefully provide some protection from high humidity and perspiration. btw, I have some Nikwax Down Proof, but have not used it yet. I just reread the description from Nikwax, and they say that it leaves a DWR coating on the shell as well as the down.

Guess I should have read the Down Proof bottle label a little closer. My main concerns are from sweat and an precip that gets on the shell before I could get a rain shell on.

I haven't needed it.

I would use the spray on.
