There's a thread already started about this. Also, it just an op-ed piece, I don't think it would have passed muster at the NY Time as a fact based article.

That's false. It as an op-ed, but it relies on many peer-reviewed scientific papers--I've read quite a few published papers supporting the op ed's conclusion.
A very busy trail like the AT, with many thousands (or tens of thousands in some places) of users is going to displace a lot of wildlife. I know the obvious retort is that "I saw 12 bears on my thru hike." But that's relevant. The real question--which you can't answer from personal anecdote--is how many more bears would be along the trail corridor if the trail didn't exist?
